They list certain finished projects for a seasonal release date even if that book/record is finished and ready long beforehand, even as much as a season before. My daughter submitted the finished manuscript of her second book of poetry to her new publishers in June but the publication date they gave her was March 2007, when they release a whole slew of new titles. Does it really take that long to do a final edit/proofread, slap on a cover, send it to the printer then ship it to bookstores? Apparently, yes. It may not work exactly this way for new CD's but Richard's new covers record may be caught in the middle of a similarly bottlenecked process. Then again, the holdup may be Richard trying to decide on cover art. We all know how anal he can be about such minute things. To wit: soundchecks. There are all sorts of Legal, artistic and logistical things that have to be considered. THere are major market release times to optimize the soundscans. MOst cds get released in Septemeber and February. there is advertising and competing interests that get set up and thought about before a release. I have no clue what signature sounds is doing so that Richards's release is taking that long. but i am sure that there are factors that caused the decision. As for Lori Mckenna's cd. She just started recording in July and now her parts are done. There may be production and post production concerns.... Then ofcourse, Richard and Lori are not the ONLY artists on their labels.... each cd release should get the full attention of the advertising $$$ and full attention of the label.... I want to hear these as much as anyone.....but i too have to wait I do recommend Shawn Colvin's release. THese four walls in the meantime...... it comes out in september 12th... its just great sharon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2006 08:22:43 -0700 From: "Pam Pickering" Subject: [RS] CD and concerts I suppose waiting until March would at least be a bit more tolerable if Richard would include Northern California on his fall touring schedule... Abbie is a member of Red Molly, along with Laurie MacAllister and Carolann Solebello, and they were the toast of the Falcon Ridge Emerging Artist Showcase. Both CDs are packed, I tell you, with great original songs and covers. Besides, then you'll be prepared for Red Molly's show at our Court House Concert series on February 11, 2007. Which, though it seems a looooong way away, is still a month before the new Shindell CD is released. I like these CDs so much that I will offer my version of Ron Greitzer's money-back guarantee. If you buy either of these CDs and you don't like them, Ron will buy them back from you. (OK, I'm kidding, but they are really good) Gene F. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2006 09:26:06 -0700 From: "Pam Pickering" Subject: [RS] CD and Concerts That makes perfect sense, Carrie! I think that would make a nice trip and I'm sure Richard could get a nice flight home from San Francisco!! Just have to wait till Novermber. I don't know why everyone is so despondent over the covers release date--didn't you also read that RS was going to "move on and start recording the next disc of originals." ?? That means we'll obviously have an original recording before March, so cheer up! ; ) John McD. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2006 23:07:03 -0400 From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Passing the time OK, Gene, I'll take your word on Red Molly. I see that they cover two Gillian Welch songs and one Patty Griffin song, so at least they've got great taste. Although I've gotta say, no one does "Caleb Meyer" (a great -- if that's the word -- rape/murder ballad) like Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. But since you've offered my money back guarantee (which I guess means that if I don't like it, I'll buy it back from myself), I'll take a chance. And since you've shared your latest obsession with us, I'll share mine with y'all: Antje Duvekot. They're still cleaning the drool off the Tracy Grammer List where I blathered on about this amazing woman, who I first heard on a CD at a party in Portland a couple of weeks ago. Beth Desombre was standing next to me during my moment of revelation, so she can vouch that I ain't kidding. Listen to "Jerusalem" or "Judas" or "Dandelion" or "Long Way" (which I, no kidding, listened to 15 times in a row the other day) and you'll be hooked. And if you're not, well, you've got Gene's money-back guarantee. You don't like Antje's CD, and Gene will buy a Red Molly CD for you. ;-) But don't take my word for it. She'll be here in San Diego next month (albeit opening for Ellis Paul). Or check out her video on YouTube. You'll be smitten. Smitten, I tell ya. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKnTpRvdQJI End of drool session, the sequel. I've only seen her once--opening for Richard!--but I was very impressed. (This was last April, in Lexington; Antje flew all the way out from her west-coast tour with Ellis Paul to give that single performance, claiming that opening for Richard was too awesome to pass up. And as I recall, the young lady whom I brought to that concert wound up liking Antje more than Richard!) Definitely check out her material. - --Chris - -- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us). But there is this comfort: otherwise we should not know, or so much love, what we do love.
