Yeah, RG. Me too. I like the song and don't tire of it. His playing is indeed very good, and most everyone seems to forgive the inevitable hiccup. And though I write about the shows I'm really no critic. After all it is live music, right? At all the shows I've been to RS appears to actually be singing and playing in real time. Not like Ashley Simpson or Milli Vanilli. I imagine it is difficult to play an instrument and sing at the same time. So much so that woodwind players never do it. Both songs have very similar structures - multiple verses with similar patterns, first line repeating as last line in each verse, no chorus. This type of structure definitely makes for a dramatic song but it's easy to see how one could get a bit lost, particularly when performing these songs might after night as Ron noted. However, there was a funny mix-up during Che Guevara T-Shirt at the Boulton Center show, one that presented a delicious visual. The second verse goes like this: The stowaway is keeping still In the dark of his container With his blanket and his flashlight And a picture of his sweetheart He's rationing his batteries But right now he can't resist her Standing there with her long brown hair In that Che Guevara t-shirt and the fourth goes like this: Late at night he ventures out Each time a little farther Emboldened by his wanderlust His boredom and his hunger 'Til he's standing out on the open deck Searching for La Cruz del Sur But by-and-by the sky he knows Has yielded to another However, at Boulton, the fourth went like this: Late at night he ventures out Each time a little farther >With his blanket and his flashlight And a picture of his sweetheart < 'Til he's standing out on the open deck Searching for La Cruz del Sur But by-and-by the sky he knows Has yielded to another Gave me the image of Linus Van Pelt dragging his security blanket across the deck of the ship. No wonder the stowaway got caught! In any case, once Richard realized the mix-up he clearly smiled. I don't know if he got a similar image in his head, but I thought it was a hoot.
