Discussion's been great of late! I haven't seen anyone post that Richard has an update re: the album on his website, with 10 songs to be on the album. It worries me that he has so many musicians; I was hoping for something like one of his concerts...o well. I love it we are talking about related artists. I can finally say something about a local (Frederericksburg, VA) couple who don't tour but are excellent--their second album, to my amazement is on Napster, so you can give it a listen: Laurie Rose Griffith and Peter Mealy, "Something Good." Album starts with Julie Miller's "Letters to Emily," and includes "The Kid." There's a lovely song by Katia Cardenal "El Salvador" in Spanish that I think Richard would like. I also recommend "Anchor" by Susan White and "Family" by Pat White for Laurie's incredible voice, and Peter doing his own "Real World" ("it sounds gentle, but it doesn't protest gently"--Joan Baez) and "Breakfast Club." Peter does the guitar. They have a Web site. A singer not often mentioned by ya'll is Peter Mulvey. I still think "Kitchen Radio" is terrific, and I'm coming to the same conclusion about his latest, "The Knuckleball Suite." He takes a few listens, for some reason. As for first albums, I've noticed the syndrome and I think the quote from Cheryl Wheeler gets at it. I do think that Sparrows Point could be Richard's best, and Blue Divide--well my least favorite, but I wouldn't be without it. (I'd put Vuelta behind SP, RH, and SNP--but you should still listen to Peter and Laurie even if you think I'm tone deaf!). I don't know if Dylan's first album should count, and it is charming in its own way--with Fenario, don't forget--but Freewheelin' is something else. I think Jackson Browne's 3rd is his best, Springsteen's 2nd (with Sandy) is like Foucault's first and second--the first shows lots of talent and many great songs, the second is a great album--that's my bias, I guess--Vuelta has some great songs but they don't add up for me. "Big Pink" was The Band's first, and I think most people like it best, but I slightly prefer their second, "The Band." I'll stop after this, I swear: I love Counting Crows "August and Everything After," and hate almost "everything after," although I gave up after the third studio. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jun 2006 14:18:09 -0400 From: "Gene Frey" Subject: [RS] The News page has News!
