One of my few perfect "no-skipped-tracks" CDs ever. Raw, stark, solo acoustic, amazing. You've got my money-back guarantee on this: you don't like it, I'll buy it from you. RG This RG will second Ron's recommendation. That CD is FANTASTIC! I had a very hard time accepting that Flaming Red did not have the same direct and immediate feel. (I've long since forgiven her.) She's quite enjoyable live, too. My first experience with her songs? Hmm, Heirloom Solutions in Glen Rock, NJ, about five or six years ago, some guy played Mary in dadgad tuning in amongst a myriad of Shindell tunes... Patty Griffin: Buy "Living with Ghosts" as everyone has suggested. It is an amazing CD and one that never grows old. As for her others, I think "Impossible Dream" is a better overall album than "1000 Kisses" but that Kisses is more memorable because of certain knockout tunes. I hate "Flaming Red". But I'm an acoustic snob. :) She is great live as well. One of the best shows I ever saw was with her and Emmylou Harris. Ellis Paul: He is good too. I have always felt his albums have been overproduced but he is great live and a wonderful songwriter. I like his older stuff the most because it is less prodiced but that is just my preference. I think he's releasing a best of soon which may be the bets bet since he has a ton of albums. Oh and a very friendly man! Jeffrey Foucualt: His first CD is another great one. Like Living with Ghosts, it is almost completely solo. The songwriting is amazing on it. I didnt really like his second album although many would disagree - album just didnt speak to me. It does contain "NBorthbound 35", his best song and one Richard may put on his covers album. I recently got his latest called "Ghost Repeater" which is more country but I like it a lot. Bo Ramsey as you mentioned produced it and they are a good match. If you like him, you will probably like Greg Brown and Kelly Joe Phelps' work too but you may already be onto that. Is anyone a fan of that one? << People tend to have a love-it-or-hate-it relationship with "Flaming Red." They hate it because, as a follow up to the brilliant "Living With Ghosts," it strayed too far from the straight acoustic approach. On they other hand, they love it for the broader variety of styles. Here's another review from Glenn McDonald, and he clearly falls in the hate-it camp. Or, rather, the "disappointed" camp. _http://www.furia.com/page.cgi?type=twas&id=twas0183_ (http://www.furia.com/page.cgi?type=twas&id=twas0183) Me, once I got past the shock of the first few notes of the record, I've come to love it, and it's one of my all-time top ten. Favorite songs are "Mary" (Jim, you heard someone do that in DADGAD? Do tell . . . heh heh), "Tony," "Change" and "Goodbye." Out of all her CDs (not counting "Silver Bell," which was never officially released, but is floating around), "Impossible Dream" is the one I simply haven't been able to wrap my ears around. Tall fellow, wore a beard, name of Grittzer, or Grottzer, or something like that. Lots of Shindell, Dave Carter, Cheryl Wheeler. Even some Dar Williams. Not much Dan Fogelberg, though. Gene F. Her show included forgiveness and mostly new music. Patty has put out a cd every 2-3 years. it makes sense seeing she tours each for about that time. She is heading in the studio to record. her compatriots have also started recording. Mary Chapin Carpenter is in the studio this summer and Shawn Colvin will have a new cd out in september.... i think that rosanne cash has put out one of the premier cds of the year with Black Cadillac. i think that this cd has cast her as one of the premier singer songwriters. i have been listening to Paul Simon's new cd alot. it took a few listens and going back to hearts and bones and Saints to GET it.... once you do, you wont be able to get it out of your head.. i think that the Springsteen cd is like a party.... too bad he strains too much when he sings... but so does Pete now..... the dixie chicks have added to their catalogue with a good cd..... remember they made patty griffin rich!!!! sharonG ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jun 2006 10:54:23 -0500 From: "kunigunda" Subject: Re: [RS] easy listening Greg sez Carrie, you mentioned you have all her albums. Is there anything on Flaming Red that you like or should I just skip that one? Maybe skip it for now? Put the money towards another new artist or save it for her upcoming cd. Flaming Red is ok but I think you have the three best especially if you're an acoustic fan. Quite a few of the songs on Flaming Red are done on A Kiss in Time...however they sound alot different. I'd stick w/ what you have. Have you listened to Kasey Chambers or Lori McKenna yet? To the excellent suggestions made by others I would add Lori McKenna, Willy Porter, and Iron & Wine. Lori is a wonderful artist, one of my favorite singer/songwriters, and the albums "Bittertown" and "Pieces of Me" are both just excellent. Willy Porter is a bit more conventional and "radio-friendly" than other folk artists, but I mean that in a super-positive way. He is a joy to listen to, and an even greater joy to see live. (If some of his tunes are conventional, his stage presentation is anything but. And he is an absolute WIZARD on the guitar.) He also does a pretty good cover of Richard's "You Stay Here". I recommend his live CD, "High Wire Live". Iron & Wine (aka Sam Beam) has a stripped-down acoustic feel, "homey" and unadorned. It's not everyone's cup of tea, and it's a big departure from the kind of polished complexity we hear in Richard's music, but I find it a refreshing change of pace. - --Chris - -- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us). It's not favorable to President Idjit. "Standing In Your Memory (For Phil Ochs)" is a great tribute to Phil "No Reply" is based on a true story. When Jen was an Assistant DA, a guy came up to the courthouse to confess to a murder from 50 years ago. Diana Jones - "My Remembrance Of You" My favorite is "Pretty Girl" - the mournful lament of a dance hall girl. It's also the favorite of a lot of Folk DJs, it placed #4 on the April FolkDJ Top Played Songs list. There are several songs on this CD that bring to mind Gillian Welch and David Rawlings style of guitar.
