I guess my favorite cd is 1000 Kisses. A Kiss in Time is a live recording of previously recorded songs. Flaming Red is more rockabilly - non accoustic. Her first cd was Living with Ghosts, her latest Impossible Dream. She re-does alot of her songs and is not terribly prolific. Kinda Richard like. I've been waiting for some new stuff for a couple years, but I just read where she just began recording songs for a new cd. No release date tho - kinda Richard like. carrie in kc ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Jun 2006 14:59:29 +0000 From: kmzundel@comcast.net (Karen Zundel ) Subject: Re: [RS] easy listening Well, being a big Ellis Paul fan, I'd have to recommend Ellis . Coincidentally, he and Patty Griffin both hail from Maine and cut their teeth together as folk musiciains in Boston in the late 80s-early 90s. Patty can be heard doing background vocals all over Ellis' early releases. See www.ellispaul.com. And Ellis Paul new's protege, Antje Duvekot (pronounced ON-tia DOOV-a-kot), very recent winner of the Kerrville Folk Festival's New Folk Award, is wonderful. You can listen to several songs from her just-released "Big Dream Boulevard" at her Myspace at http://www.myspace.com/antjeduvekot. One of my few perfect "no-skipped-tracks" CDs ever. Raw, stark, solo acoustic, amazing. "Every Little Bit" will send shivers up your spine, "Poor Man's House" will bring tears to your eyes, and "Forgiveness" will just blow your doors off. You've got my money-back guarantee on this: you don't like it, I'll buy it from you. RG ________________________________________________________________________ Check out AOL.com today. Can't argue at all. But 1000 kisses has several strong songs that should hook any first listener; Rain, Long Ride Home, and Nobody's Cryin. Wow! I must admit I'm not crazy about ending the cd with a swing song and mil besos. Perhaps she ran out of her own material? The first 7 cuts could command double the price (imoho). carrie in kc ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Jun 2006 15:06:59 -0400 From: rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] easy listening >> Can't argue at all. I think he was rather harsh on the first 7 songs however. Was getting ready to pigeon hole him as a curmudgeon when I read his take on the one Dolly Parton cd I own - Halos and Horns. What a surprise! carrie in kc ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jun 2006 21:57:05 -0700 (PDT) From: Greg Sheridan Subject: Re: [RS] easy listening Thanks everyone, for the great suggestions. Luckily for me, many of the songs people mentioned were ones that I hadn't already discovered on my own. I was listening to the following Patty Griffin songs over and over: Top Of The World Let Him Fly - reminds me of Bonnie Raitt Making Pies - Glenn McDonald's favorite Every Little Bit Don't Come Easy Useless Desires Rain I just went back now and listened to all of Living With Ghosts and 1000 Kisses on Napster and my doors are cleanly blown off. You can put your wallet away, Ron. Now that I've listened to both of them as complete albums, I can see that they are definitely very different, but I like both of them very much. I really like Impossible Dream, too. I had overlooked Poor Man's House, Forgiveness and You Never Get What You Want on Living With Ghosts and Nobody's Crying and Long Ride Home on 1000 Kisses. I'm going to pick up all three CDs. I couldn't get past the first couple of songs I tried on Flaming Red, but I didn't really try very hard. Is anyone a fan of that one? Maybe I should give it another chance. Carrie, you mentioned you have all her albums. Is there anything on Flaming Red that you like or should I just skip that one? This is the first time I've been really excited about a new artist since I discovered Richard a few years ago. I can't wait until she comes to New York. By the way, anyone know if Richard and Patty have ever played together? Karen, thanks for the info on Ellis Paul, too. He's on my list of new people to check out, but I just haven't gotten to him yet. Not having enough time to listen to all of the music I have on deck is a problem I haven't had in years. This Napster thing is incredible. One problem with Ellis Paul, though - you can listen to the whole song for almost everything Napster has, but for certain albums(very few), they only have 30 second clips. His "American Jukebox Fables" is one of them. I think they have the whole song for the rest of his stuff, though. They have 8 of his albums. Are there any in particular that you would recommend? Anyone's suggestions for other similar artists would be very much appreciated. By the way, in case anyone is interested, Napster only has Jeffrey Foucault's first album, but here are the songs I really like from that one so far: Secretariat - sounds like it could be off of Greg Brown's Further In. Not sure if it's Kelly Joe Phelps or Bo Ramsey I hear, or if it's Jeffrey himself, but I think I read that Bo Ramsey produced Jeffrey's latest album. I'm Alright Highway and the Moon Battle Hymn OK, thanks again guys. I'm heading back to Napster. Greg S. Tired of spam? Yahoo!
