And as far as crossing musical genres is concerned, Rod Stewart certainly did just that with his two albums of standards. Talk about annoying. RemindinRonD ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Feb 2006 08:57:51 -0800 From: "Bill Chmelir" Subject: [RS] The Crappys The Grammys are about as accurate at picking the best music and musical artists as the Academy Awards are at picking the best films and actors. Maybe 1 in 5 picks turns out to be worth a crap. That reminds me of an amusing little anecdote. I have a good friend Anna (yah, yah, another "I knew this guy who knew so and so" story) who's sister was a model in New York City and was dating Christian Slater about 9 years ago. Anyway, Anna went out to visit her sister and went out to dinner with her and Christian. Anna is a very intelligent woman and was an Ecology PhD student at the time and wanted to try to find out what actually made this movie star tick. So she asked him a few questions, one of which was "do you vote"? He answered something like "yah, last year I voted for Young Shakespeare In Love, Tom Hanks, etc..." "No, I mean for the President, for your Governor, for Congress".... Long uncomfortable silence... He was so far removed from reality that to him voting meant voting for the Academy Awards. The Grammys are crap. I = wonder if any of you remember a past lister from KC, Donna Trussell aka = thiswaspompeii@aol.com. She is a huge Richard fan of course. Anyway, = we email each other several times a year, and last fall she sent me this = link. Her husband Robert Coleman Trussell released a cd she wanted me = to hear. If you're interested, you can hear some long cuts on cd baby. = I think it's wonderful that someone with some talent, the inclination = and a few bucks can make a cd. http://cdbaby.com/cd/rctrussell Here is a blurb from a newletter he sent out. Many thanks to friends, DJs and other acoustiholics who have made = possible a surprising amount of airplay considering my obscurity and $0 = promotion budget. Multiple cuts on Texas Gothic have aired in San = Antonio, Salt Lake City and Lawrence, Kansas as well as in Europe. The Netherlands and Belgium are apparently home to more roots-music = maniacs than anyplace in the world. It's an honor to appear on = playlists that include some of the songwriters I admire most. "Mama Don't You Know," the opening cut on Texas Gothic, appears on the = next Oasis CD Acoustic Sampler, which will soon be shippped to 600 radio = stations and webcasters. Recently this song was proclaimed "ironic" by = a British musician who took note of the upbeat tempo and melancholy = subject matter. My 1971 D-28 Martin guitar has been looking weathered and = WillieNelsonesque for years now, so for Christmas my wife went against = her cynical instincts and trusted a total stranger with a cashier's = check. In return the Florida resident sent me a gem--a 1974 Martin = D-35. Seller said, "Man, it's a sweet guitar. I wouldn't be selling it = if it weren't for the hurricanes." I took the bait, and the man was = right. It's a beaut. Happy New Year, everbody, and thanks for the support. Stop by the = website and say hello. Without fail, they'll play a Barry White song where one of my co-workers will say, "I love this song." As if she hasn't heard it in a long time when in fact it was played yesterday and she had made the same comment! I feel like I'm in a bad re-run, same crap, different day. On my way home from work, I'll blast Shindell, Dar, Ellis Paul, anyone who has an independent voice and sound. I wanna hear music that doesn't sound like it was cut from the same cloth as the song before it. And I wonder how could they nominate this crap for anything when it all sounds the same. How can they differentiate one song from another? Oh well, sorry to rant like that but I have "It's Raining Men" pounding in my head and I can't seem to get it out. I tried listening to Ellis but I think it might call for the big guns, Sparrow's Point and maybe Courier for good measure! Janet Tired of spam? Yahoo! My problem with Devils & Dust being nominated for Best Folk Album is that it was also nominated in a couple of the Rock categories. It should be one or the other but not both. That being said, I'm thrilled that John Prine and Tim O'Brien won their respective divisions. susan in alameda ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V8 #28 **********************************
