Maybe Richard needs to work with a DJ...just kidding. That would be horrible. >Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2006 21:56:17 -0500 >From: Chris Foxwell >Subject: Re: [RS] Re: Dance Song of the Week > > >Okay, new listserv topic: favorite RS dance songs. In fact, I often have things to say, but find it difficult to rein in my enthusiasm and then transfer it to words, when I hear about all you creative folks out there, listening to RS and trying to figure him out. Then I know I am not the only crazy person, driving around in my car, listening to RS and being moved to tears! Anyway, I see a lot of mixed images here: Though I am not a Catholic, there is obviously that, but the narrator of the song seems jaded about his beliefs, as evidenced by the words: "Be a sport Mary, don't tell dad, he need not know he's been had. Never you mind about those seven seals, daddy was a one-shot deal.." This makes some reference to G-d, though I am not sure in what capacity. It seems to be a negative inference, and suggests that Mary "have her own scene," meaning her own disciples. "The one-shot deal," reference can be both a sexual reference, as well as a reference to G-d perhaps being a one-time belief that doesn't have much resonance anymore for the narrator. There are some beautiful, wonderful, pastoral images and references to nature, like, "Let me live in the arms of a willow." And also, maybe, something Pagan or Wiccan, when he asks Mary to turn him into witch. By that, I mean it's as though the narrator talks about the feminine aspect of spirituality, with references to procreation, "blue eggs," even Fleur de Lys is a feminine kind of pattern. All in all, the song is filled with images of fertility and wholeness and nature, vs. organized religion, or something about religion originating from nature?? Pardon the rambling; I am brainstorming as I write, while listening to the song in my head. The only thing that makes me wonder about the song is the line, "It could be that easy, ..I, with my baby.." Is this a reference to an infant baby, as in Jesus, or a "grown up, romantic" baby?" Either way, the song seems to be about harmony somehow, an imaginary place with the potential for such harmony. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2006 12:50:52 -0500 From: John McDonnell Subject: [RS] Re: Dancing with the Stars Hi All, RG wrote: >>But I must say, after reading some of these crazy FDL musings (which I believe must be written tongue-partially-in-cheek), I almost long for the days of "it's got a good beat; I can dance to it." ;-)<< Let me just say that I never joke about Egyptian creation myths in general, nor the Great Cackler in particular ;-). As for dance tunes--I'm no ballroom dancer, but "Easy Street" seems a perfect waltz, and a Rumba, Merengue or a Salsa (I have no idea which) has to go with "Lazy" and "There Goes Mavis". I think Elaine from "Seinfeld" would perform a fine terpsichorean abomination to "Arrowhead," as would I, if I ever tried it, which, you know, I haven't.
