[Jamie Younghans / John McDonnell > Another note is that I think that the Smothers Brothers show was canceled due to Pete Seeger singing "Big Muddy" after he was told not to. So it was also taken as a commentary on the Vietnam "conflict" even though the song is set in 1942. << I've often heard that Seeger's performance caused the cancellation of the show, and have actually heard Richard make the same claim. But that's not how I recall it (seeing as I'm old enough TO recall it), so I did a little Googling today. Turns out that the originally planned performance of the song on The Smothers Brothers Comedy hour was scheduled for Sept. 10, 1967, but the network censors cut it. Tom and Dick took the story to the papers, which resulted in a public outcry. The network conceded, and Seeger was invited back to perform the song in January of 1968. The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was not canceled until April 4, 1969. Now, to be fair, the show WAS canceled because of continued Smothers/Network battles over content and censorship. But the Seeger song was just a part of a much bigger issue. Just FYI, here's Pete Seeger's take on the incident: http://www.peteseeger.net/givepeacechance.htm RG ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Dec 2005 01:10:04 -0500 From: Jamie Younghans / John McDonnell Subject: [RS] RE: myspace? Hi All, You guys obviously are more versed in this cyberspace thing than I, so forgive my ignorance, BUT--is Bruce's idea a splinter group, potentially setting up a Crips/Bloods dynamic?? Shin-Heads vs. Shindelleers? I, for one, will always be on this list, regardless of what else is out there. Ultimately, though, wouldn't it really be something if RS had a following large enough for whole bunch of fan sites? I don't think anyone on this list would have a problem with that. I have no idea about traffic volume, but would have to defer to RG's characterization of the traffic on this list as light--too light, in fact, for me because I am disappointed on every day that there are no posts (and I do have a life--despite indications to the contrary). On the flip side, I am often frustrated when there are posts and I miss them for a few days, and I want to respond to something from which everyone has moved on. It's never been a problem, per se--and certainly not enough for me to support a different discussion format--but sometimes you miss the momentum of a topic. Although we're all RS fans, it seems that there are different interests among us, from guitar aficionados to politicos, but I also like the fact that the posts can go from one to another--it gives it a greater sense of serendipity. Would those of you with specific interests (and I mean that in addition to, not the exclusion of other interests) feel that the list would be better if it were organized by threads (all guitar talk, for example) than the way it is now?? I like it, since, as you know by now, I'll weigh in on virtually anything. You may think I'm nuts (and probably not for the first time)--and I don't mean it as a knock on Bruce's idea, since change, even for its own sake, can be good--but I am disturbed by the notion that everything has to be specified and compartmentalized. It reminds me of George Carlin's routine about his farts (I got my Heineken fart, my non-dairy cream fart---etc), and this kind of hyper-analysis that I find prevalent in our society. Choice is good, but it's also unnecessarily stressful, though it is somewhat unseemly to complain about it. It doesn't REALLY matter whether you have the Grande or the Venti French vanilla latte, and the decision is hardly the dilemma of the century (especially if many people can't afford a regular cup of coffee), but I find this creeping tendency that if one is not deliberating on such a decision, then one is simply not paying attention, which is not only insidiously stress-inducing, but is an indication that we are just becoming horribly solipsistic conspicuous consumers. There's never a sense that the world is NOT about you, since everything exists for YOUR gratification, so the idea of self-improvement remains an illusion. In short--thanks RG and Sally for the list, and if it ain't broke.... John McD. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Dec 2005 01:02:52 -0800 From: Sandy Smith Subject: [RS] get your tabs and lyrics online while you still can According to an article at BBC.com, the music industry plans to start cracking down on websites that offer tablature, lyrics, etc. They're going to be taking a very hard line about it in 2006. Here's a link to the article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4508158.stm I find this particularly frustrating because my interest in Latin music is much stronger than my Spanish, and some artists don't include lyrics in their liner notes. If you can't make out the words aurally, a Spanish-English dictionary won't help you figure out what the lyrics to the song mean. Also, I listen to a Spanish- language music station that almost never identifies a song it has just played (or even name the artist), so if I hear a song I like the only way I can find out what it is (so I can *BUY* it, in case anyone from the industry is reading this) is to jot down a snippet of the lyrics and google them in hope of finding a website that has the lyrics and identifies the artist and the name of the song. I've ended up finding a lot of new artists (new to me) whom I like a lot by doing this - and buying a LOT of new CDs as a result - but I won't be able to do it anymore if the music industry gets its way.
