RG please correct me if I misunderstood. I have always heard RS's version of Big Muddy as a blatant commentary on the current administrations policy. Historical retelling --yes---history repeats itself---yes. And the 'big push' John McD mentions in '42 would be meaningful if the song was indeed set overseas (either Pacific or Europe) but the song is set in Louisiana. So the "big push" would not be necesasary especially since risking the lives of troops would be foolish on maneuvers if they were needed on the front line. Another note is that I think that the Smothers Brothers show was cancelled due to Pete Seeger singing "Big Muddy" after he was told not to. So it was also taken as a commentary on the Vietnam "conflict" even though the song is set in 1942. Even then the media was influenced by White House policy. In fact, I think the song is more revelant because it is set in America, rather than overseas. Let me explain. Waist deep isn't necessarily an anti-war song. It is, instead, a song about stubbornly stupid leaders and the dangers of blindly following their stupid orders. Seeger was making an allegorical point-- that the war in Vietnam was like going deeper and deeper into a swampy river with no way out except for withdrawal. In his revival of the song, Shindell is making the comparison of Iraq to Vietnam to that swampy river down in LA. >> Another note is that I think that the Smothers Brothers show was cancelled due to Pete Seeger singing "Big Muddy" after he was told not to. At the end, it sounds like the same guy is asking "Listen, are you ready now?" (Oye,ya esta listo?) I could be wrong, but that's what I hear in there. I had taken RS's version as more of an overview of the general policies, excluding in my thinking, that Mr. Seeger surely meant it that way. I was thinking about it only in terms of war for PS's version. The "Push On" can be detrimental anytime if unchecked and misguided. And, I didn't mean 7th game of the Sox-Cards series, I meant 5th game as it was a sweep. I guess I am so used to the Sox stretching it soooo much that it was a habitual slip. The off-spring corrected me after the fact. Peace (out) Bernadette ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Dec 2005 23:47:43 EST From: OzWoman321@aol.com Subject: [RS] South Florida Folk Festival 2006 Cancellation Hello, All - FYI... from the SFFF Directors - as a long-time volunteer, I (among many others) find this decision heartbreaking but understandable... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ South Florida Folk Festival 2006 Cancellation Official Press Release and Notification By now many members of the local and national folk and acoustic music community have gotten wind (and bA Mighty Windb it was indeed) that the 2006 South Florida Folk Festival has been cancelled. This announcement serves to officially notify the public regarding the status of the Festival and its related components. Due to the effects of Hurricane Wilma, which hit South Florida at the end of October, it is with deep regret that the South Florida Folk Festival Board of Directors must formally announce the cancellation of the 2006 Festival. This decision was necessary because the park which normally accommodates the Festival was not only badly damaged by the storm, but it has also been deemed an emergency residential housing area by the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA), thus causing us to seek alternative venues on extremely short notice. After three weeks of contacting and visiting other potential parks and venues, we were unable to find a suitable alternative location for the Festival that would enable us to ensure a high-quality event for our performers and audience, while also not posing a financial risk to the 2007 Festival. Many logistical issues came into play in this process, including concerns related to amplified sound, space, conflicting events, camping, and performer lodging constraints, as well as conditions related to insurance changes and event funding. In careful review of our options, it was determined that we could not feasibly produce a full-fledged Festival by January 14th and 15th, 2006, due to all of these combined issues on such short notice with the resources available to us. While we are all very disappointed that this decision was fundamentally forced on us by issues beyond our full control, we believe it to be in the best interest of our sponsor, The Broward Folk Club, and all other stakeholders, to cancel the 2006 Festival in the presence of so many obstacles and unknowns within the timeframe required. We hope that all who are affected by this decision will understand and accept our rationale for cancellation. This decision has had a great impact on many performers who were planning on participating in the event, including 6 headlining performers, 15 national singer/songwriter competition finalists, and approximately 50 other fine selected performers. To them, we express our sincere apologies. While we are not able to effectively accommodate all of the performers who had planned to participate, we have made alternative decisions affecting some of those performers, as follows: b" The National Singer/Songwriter Competition, which normally would include a live performance-based final judging process at the Festival, will continue via an independent judging process based on the recorded music that each finalist submitted for the competition. We will be using highly esteemed judges from within the national folk community for this purpose. The judges will independently listen to the submissions of the 15 finalists using a common judging form. The scores will be compiled upon completion of judging and three (3) final winners will be announced. The winners of the competition will receive prize monies, local and national recognition in the form of press releases, and they will be invited to perform at the 2007 Festival, in addition to the three winners who won the 2005 Competition. b" There are other performers, including some of the headliners, who had made additional arrangements to perform within the local area or who had unchangeable travel reservations. Several of them still wish to obtain performance opportunities over the weekend of the cancelled Festival. To that end, local house concert producers and other event producers are being notified as to which performers fall into this category, and they are working together to arrange for alternative productions, not directly affiliated with the Festival, as best as can possibly be arranged on short notice. There are, unfortunately, no guarantees that they will be able to make alternative arrangements for all performers, however. Specific announcements regarding alternative productions will be forthcoming as soon as possible via www.GotFolk.com and other mediums such as local papers and public radio announcements. b" Performers who were selected to perform at the 2006 Festival will not be automatically invited to perform at the 2007 Festival. This decision was made because the circumstances that caused the 2006 Festival to be cancelled were truly beyond our control, coupled with the fact that we cannot predict the format for the 2007 Festival at this time, or the numbers of stages or performers that we will be able to accommodate due to the conditions of the parks as currently exists. Thus, performers who wish to be considered for the 2007 Festival will have to reapply in the traditional fashion during the upcoming application period in 2006. To all of our volunteers, supporters, and audience members, we extend a hearty bthanksb for your ongoing commitment and support of the South Florida Folk Festival. We could not produce this event without your interest and involvement and we hope that you will continue to support the Festival and the entire folk community into the future. Please stay tuned to the South Florida Folk Festival website (http://www.SouthFloridaFolkFest.com ) for ongoing information about the event. It is also recommended that you regularly visit the website www.GotFolk.com for continuous information about local folk and acoustic music events in support of the music that we have all come to know and love. We wish you all an enjoyable holiday season and success into the New Year!
