I remembered and was able to tune in last night. I didn't know what to expect as far as quality. The guitar was loud and twangy throughout. He mentioned something about a classical guitar, but all sounded pretty much the same...and certainly not like a classical guitar. Anyway, it was fun to hear R live, singing new songs. Are we gonna have a guessing contest for the release date of the new cd? I'm guessing August 1, 06. Sigh....a long time to wait. Carrie in KC - -- No virus found in this outgoing message. I was with a party of three--myself, one Shindell journeyman, and one complete rookie--at the Thursday show, and Reinhard wound up being the fourth person seated at the table. We had a blast, it was my first experience attending a Richard show with a fellow "hardcore fan", if we do indeed qualify as such. And during the wine/cheese/fruit reception on Friday, the two of us met up with Adam Plunkett. It was a regular listserv party! Nice to meet you guys. Concerning Friday's reception: I was there with my aforementioned "journeyman" friend, a grad student in religion who regularly does research in Buenos Aires, and it turns out that while in Buenos Aires, she works closely with a scholar who is best friends with Richard and Richard's wife. How about that! Small world, eh? Anyway, on to business: Reinhard nailed the setlist for Thursday, so I'll go ahead and do the same for Friday's show. ;-) Yep, I managed to procure a ticket at the 11th hour, and actually wound up sitting right next to the stage, front and center, with a group whose fourth member backed out. The show was very similar, with a few more of Richard's tunes and slightly fewer cover songs. 1. Acadian Driftwood (Robby Robertson) 2. Mary Magdalen 3. Lawrence, KS (Josh Ritter) 4. There Goes Mavis 5. Next Best Western 6. Northbound 35 (Jeffrey Foucault) 7. Senor (Dylan) 8. Cancion Sencilla 9. the Silvio Rodriguez tune, which I believe he referred to as "What Do I Do Now?" 10. Fenario 11. Reunion Hill 12. Che Guevara T-Shirt 13. Fishing 14. Last Fare of the Day 15. Transit (encore) Sitting on Top of the World (Doc Watson) Excellent show all around. Richard was in excellent form, as he was on Thursday. It was really neat to see Richard "rock out" every so slightly with the electric guitar; I didn't like *all *of the songs as much on the alternate instrumentation--though some sounded great--but there was no doubt that Richard was having a blast, and that effectively diffused to the audiences, I think. A few personal notes about Thursday and Friday's shows: --The Thursday performance of "Mavis", which was the encore for that show, was absolutely the best I've ever heard. Just...wow. Richard was really into it, and it had tremendous energy and drive, yet remained suitably restrained and subtle. Wowee. If anyone managed to get a decent webcast recording of this, please let me know! --I second Reinhard's approbation of "Acadian Driftwood". It is gorgeous, and it sounds like Richard was born performing it. I dearly hope to hear that on the new record. Ditto for the Rodriguez tune, which is beautiful. --For both shows, Richard did a curious rendition of "Fishing". It was very soft and pretty, understated, played on the electric guitar. On Friday, Richard said that he actually stumbled into that arrangement on Thursday, without meaning to, and that he would consciously try to reproduce it on Friday. (He was successful, and it sounded even better the second time around.) I personally prefer the grim and heavy version, a la the Courier disk, but this different style was very very pretty. --During Thursday's show, there was some discussion of the tracks that would appear on the new album, and he said that there would be several surprises that we wouldn't see coming. The audience started making guesses, and I was surprised to hear someone call out "Dancing Queen?", which was the "no way in hell" tune that I tossed out on the listserver some weeks ago. To my even greater surprise, Richard replied, in earnest and with intensity, with "that's a very good song!", and to learn from another audience member that Luka Bloom has actually covered it! During the reception on Friday, I pressed Richard for more details on these surprise songs, but he wouldn't cave. Darn. :) He did say that they wouldn't be huge shockers, just not what we'd expect. --Concerning the release of the cover album: after Friday's show, I asked Richard if he had considered asking Lucy to sing harmony on "Northbound 35", the way that Foucault has Anita Subanin backing him up. He said that he hadn't thought about it, and his expression suggested that the song treatments hadn't yet reached that level of consideration. I would guess that we're still seeing these songs in the earliest stages, so the album is probably some time off. All in all, two great nights of shows, punctuated by the wonderful meet & greet reception, and topped off by meeting two new listserv members. Pretty sweet. --Chris - -- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us). But there is this comfort: otherwise we should not know, or so much love, what we do love. Background info and lyrics are here: >http://theband.hiof.no/articles/acadian_driftwood_viney.html First, thanks Reinhard for that link, it was very interesting reading. I really hope 'Acacdian Driftwood' makes it on the cover album. I'd forgotten all about that song. When it first came out, I was reading "Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee" and hearing Richard sing it last night reminded me of the book. Funny how one memory stirs another! I also liked 'Senor' another winner in my book. I had emailed someone from Club Passim about the trouble I was having accessing the stream and I got a pretty fast reply stating they were having trouble with it. And just like majic, I was able to listen. The sound could've been better, that's for sure but it was a great concert to hear. I still hope Paul Simon's 'America' makes it on this cover album.
