I love his writing and the man has an impressive catalogue of albums, some of which are completely brilliant ("Jack's Crows" and "After Yesterday" are my two favorites). He's also a hysterical guy and entirely approachable. And lest we forget, he played in the same band with a guy named Richard Shindell back in their college days. That must have been a time. A very nice guy with a very nice voice who once wrote very good songs with regularity. Although I continue to buy his discs, Jack's Crow's was the last body of work of his that consistently moved me. Land of the Bottom Line, to this day, is one of my all-time favorite CDs. To me, he continues to have shining moments, and I make a point to try to see him live. But for magic, I revisit the earliest work. Just my opinion, don't mean to ruffle anyone's tailfeathers. - -jim ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Oct 2005 07:58:08 -0600 (MDT) From: "Sally Green Heaven" Subject: [RS] tattoos Jason Stanley wrote: > Just please don't say any of you have a tattoo of Richard on your chest. Well, not on my CHEST. Are any other listers going to see RS at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA on Nov. 17? I'll be there. - --Sally ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Oct 2005 14:27:33 +0000 From: "Tricia Mullane" Subject: [RS] RE: Shindell Stalkers "Just please don't say any of you have a tattoo of Richard on your chest." For instance, off his The Company You Keep, there's the song "Oh Abraham" addressed to Lincoln lamenting the changes in Abe's party and country. It has one of the most poignant-- and certainly not pointless-- lines: "I was born by a Kerouac stream under Eisenhower skies They saw freedom as a big idea, Now it was right before my eyes They said Jack helped to build the Pentagon And Ike built the interstate that we are off and on" Norman ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Oct 2005 22:40:16 -0400 From: "pete jameson" Subject: [RS] RE: Gorka as God John Gorka is one of tbe kindest, sweetest people on the planet. I will not take issue with "Dogs and Thunder" as being one of his less inspired songs. However, his catalog of songs is quite strong, and his sense of humor is, like Shindell's, not always understood. Or maybe it's Richard who doesn't get others' attempts at humour, and Gorka whose humour is an acquired taste. Anyway, every Gorka show that I've seen has been magical for my wife and I, and I think if you were to ask Richard his opinion, he would recognize Gorka's timing and wordplay among his strengths, if not his deft songwriting.
