It was at Fez in NYC, where there was a special CD release party for press and industry insiders. I remember meeting a couple of people who were the first members of the Dar-List, especially Scott Green, who was wearing a "Cool As I Am" T-shirt, which I had not seen before (Scott is the guy who made and shipped cassettes of Dar's first two self-produced, out-of-circ records, "I Have No History" and "All My Heroes Are Dead" for Dar-Listers willing to donate at least $15 to Dar's Snowden Trust). Two weeks later I saw Richard again at Dar's show at the Iron Horse in Northampton. Those were great shows, and I remember one hysterical anecdote. During the sound check, the sound guy asked Richard how he liked the volume on the guitar as he was playing and singing, and I quote, "Money for Fudge." Gotta love it. I know nothing about this show. Here's the catch: >The show airs at 5 and 7 am! It airs next Tuesday. They stream online >if anyone wants to listen. > >http://www.wumb.org/programs/thisweek.php Art of the Song is GREAT. One of my favorite programs. Each episode has an extended interview (usually about a half hour, though sometimes they run it, interpersed with their other features, through the whole hour) with a songwriting, talking about that person's influences, songwriting approaches, etc; they play songs by that person, and sometimes a few clips from other things the person mentioned. Then there are two other features: one is the "creativity corner," which I've never quite figured out (it's often a bit new-agey for me) in which they're trying to help people be creative, and the other is (the best of all) "the song analyst" in which they take a song and discuss something about it that shows why it's a great song, and gives lessons for things to think about or to try when writing songs. that feature varies in level of success; sometimes it's pretty unimpressive, but sometimes it blows my mind. And sometimes the song they analyze is one from the featured songwriter. And the good news is that Adam read the times wrong -- it's at 5 a.m. or *7 P.M.* (on Tuesday, on WUMB) so the second airing is at a perfectly reasonable time. Thanks, Adam, for letting me know RS would be on this week! It was at the Fast Folk Cafe down in Tribeca, and I liked Richard's music, but wasn't yet a FAN. Sure wish I could remember the details of that show. After that I remember seeing him perform with Dar at The Bottom Line (pre Cry Cry Cry) and open for Joan Baez and... in the nine years since I moved to Philadelphia, I've lost count. Up next, though, is Carnegie Hall. I'm bringing my sister (also a fan) and my mom (who's only heard Richard while in the car with me). Who else will be there? Dar's album wasn't even released till July of that year. Norman ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V7 #229 ***********************************
