Personally, I like "Someone Else's Stories", though I admit to having a soft spot for "Cover", as pronounced like Mark pronounces "Coven" in American Movie. jeff. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2005 12:10:56 -0400 From: Roxy Subject: [RS] covers I don't know if these songs have already been suggested: I'd like to hear Richard cover Tom Paxton's Peace Will Come." Or Ian & Sylvia's "Four Strong Winds or "Darcy Farrow." These are good harmony songs that he could sing with Lucy. Or how about a cover of Steve Goodman's "Yellow Coat?' I could go on and on. RS could cover anything and make it his own. When all is said and done, though, I'd just be happy to have a CD of all the covers Richard has already performed over the years, without even needing him to work up new stuff. Carrie in KC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2005 12:12:49 -0400 From: Chris Foxwell Subject: Re: [RS] re: covers I envision Richard doing one of three things: 1) coming up with something tangentially connected to the concept of "cover", having nothing to do with the actual word but related in some other way; 2) using a lyric from one of the songs on the album, much as he has done with his earlier albums (except Vuelta); or 3) using a lyric from one of his own songs, something vaguely evoking a sense of borrowing or (in)fidelity, yet not overly self-referencial or "cute". Although I think that option 1 is the more likely choice, option 3 is clearly the easiest to come up with guesses for, so here are a few of mine: --A Rose in the Pages - --A Postman's Fee (I like this one) - --Sad Country Songs (obviously only if it applies) - --Lazy (heh...I can *totally* see him using this) - --Good Citizen - --Running Deep - --The Kitchen Light - --All These Truckers - --The Weather (just because...) --Chris - -- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us). But there is this comfort: otherwise we should not know, or so much love, what we do love. I imagine the fish out of water is the only fish to have an inkling of water." - -- J.R.R. I would guess that if this project does get off the ground we will see seven or eight songs that Richard has covered regularly plus a few surprises. Considering the fact that he doesn't have to write to fill a CD's worth of material I hope Richard will give us more than 10 or 11 tracks. Gene F. If this turns out to be a 6-song EP I'll still be among the first in line to snap it up, and happily. The more, the better, is all I'm saying. That's what I get for posting in a hurry from work. You should read my inter-office e-mails. Even I can't understand half of them. That having been said, just off the top of my head from the few (heh heh) Richard shows I've seen over the years, here are some of the songs he might include, but which have never up in a recorded version anywhere (which means "Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore," "Bleecker Street," "She Belongs to Me" and a few others don't count): America (Paul Simon) Famous Blue Raincoat (Leonard Cohen) Making Plans (Dolly Parton) Once in a Very Blue Moon (Nanci Griffith, written by Patrick Alger) I Got Mine (Roy Bookbinder) Louisiana 1927 (Randy Newman) Hard Times Come Again No More (Stephen Foster) Friend of the Devil (Grateful Dead) Sin City (Gram Parsons) Love Hurts (Louvin Brothers) Four Green Fields (Tommy Makem) Sittin' on Top of the World Farewell to St. Dolores (Dave Carter) Banks of the Pontchartrain Ibm sure there are more (and am interested if anyone has heard Richard do any other unrecorded covers) but a CD with that song list would be just jiggy with me.
