Living in the Midwest, where we're lucky if we see our favorite folk artists once a year, an encore allows the show to keep going just *that* much longer. Of course, if the show is a long show, I don't "need" an encore (but I appreciate it all the same). I saw one of my favorite bands a couple years ago, and was terribly disappointed that they didn't play an encore after a 14-song set - until I found out that one of the singers had a bad cold and just couldn't push her voice any more. The last time I saw Vance Gilbert, he started to go off stage at the end of the show, then turned around and said something to the effect of "you know I'm just going to come right back out here, so why bother leaving?" (ok, it was much funnier when Vance said it). :) tm [demime 0.97c-p1 removed an attachment of type application/ms-tnef which had a name of winmail.dat] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Aug 2005 14:33:02 +0000 From: keny7744@comcast.net Subject: [RS] RS at Concerts Under The Stars Richard's show at the Concerts Under The Stars in King of Prussia, PA, was excellent! After about a 15 pause during Cheryl Wheeler's set to allow an electrical storm to pass closeby but not drop any rain on us, we were treated to two excellent sets. When I saw that RS was co-billed with Cheryl Wheeler and there was an opening act, Sonya Kitchell, I was kinda bummed and I figured he would have a short set of 30-45 minutes. But RS did a nice long set of about 67 minutes. I was very satisfied. Got my RS fix. Not that I don't like Cheryl, I do, but figured that both would be giving short sets, but my fears were not founded. I didn't write down the set list, maybe Janet Cinelli took notes. (Hey, there's dedication - driving 3 hours to see RS when you just saw him last week!) But here's what I remember. RS was very relaxed. He did several of my favorites: Last Fare of the Day, So Says The Whipporwill (with a nice introduction acknowledging Dave Carter), AYHN, Transit. He apologized for having to refer to lyrics for Deportee. He did Reunion Hill for an encore. I recorded Richard's set. If you would like a CD, please send me a blank CDR and a self-addressed mailer with enough postage to get back to you. I recommend a bubble-wrap envelope and a CDR with a jewel case. This will weigh 4 ounces, and it will cost $1.08 for First Class Mail. Please send to: Ken Yavit - RS 7/14/05 CD 713 Chapel Road Glenside, PA 19038 Please allow 2-3weeks. It may be next weekend before I can transfer it from the minidisk to my PC and master it for CD. (Hey, there's dedication - > driving 3 hours to see RS when you just saw him last > week!) It was more of 'I was in the neighborhood kind of thing' but I'm glad I stuck around for it. I thought for sure it was going to be cancelled with that wicked lightening but the rain held off! I thought Cheryl Wheeler was hysterical! I didn't know just how funny she was, although I could've done without her outhouse song. Gross! I didn't keep a set list, he did Fishing then went into Deportee. He sang AYHN but not the slow sad way. He did Summer Wind/Cotton Dress, Mavis, Big Muddy, Simple Song, giving us a rough translation. I was happy he sang So Says the Whipporill, considering Dave's birthday was the day before. An excellent show, an excellent venue and the price was unbeatable at ten bucks! The sound is supurb and the intimate nature of the layout is fab. As this was the first time for me to see Richard Shindell, I can't tell you how it compares to others, but I can tell you that I enjoyed myself immensely Set List (not in order) Merritt Parkway 2 AM Fishing Transit Deportees, by Woodie Guthrie Big Muddy Are You Happy Now Hazel's House So Says The Whipporwill The Last Fare of the Day Cancion Sencilla A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress There Goes Mavis Encore: Reunion Hill I feel like I'm forgetting some, but that's the best I can do 24+ hours later! Sorry for not writing it down at the time, but I was enjoying the show far too much! Gotta tell you - my night was made when I got a chance to ask Richard to sign my cd covers (I'm a new fan and finally went out and bought his entire cd library after listening to mp3s for the last 8 months). He was so approachable and friendly that I hit him up for A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress (the song I can never get out of my head). GREAT SHOW. Quick question - Anyone know when/why did he change the line in A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress from "love put down, gets up some how" to "love put down, comes back some how"? peace, Crys ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Aug 2005 01:02:11 -0400 From: Chris Foxwell Subject: Re: [RS] Concert at King of Prussia last night On 8/15/05, Crystal L. Welcome Crystal! Congrats on your first concert, and on the purchases. Concerning your question, I always thought that the change was made to allow for a wider interpretation of love being "put down". "Put down --> gets up" connotes the getting-up of something that was laid down on the ground, whereas "put down --> comes back" makes the return more ambiguous. While it can be seen as just another form of "laying down/getting up", it also opens up another interpretation: that of euthanasia, as in "putting down" a sick animal, a return from which is more drastic and powerful. To my ears, the first phrasing has love being set down and then getting back up and stirring up feelings, while the second phrasing has love being killed and abandoned, then "coming back" to haunt the narrator. Obviously either interpretation works for either phrasing if you want it to; it's not like the second wording suddenly creates a brand new way of hearing the song. I do feel that it makes the stronger interpretation slightly more inviting, though. Whether or not you like the stronger version is something else entirely, but I like the change either way because of its greater (to my mind) applicability. --Chris - -- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us).
