Transperformance is an annual event in Northampton (Look Park, to be precise) where local artists perform as others. Every year, there's a different theme. This years' is New York. What a super show. This one was really great. Perfect weather, perfect conditions, excellent sound, etc. Wonderful. Lucy did her set first, bringing Richard up to help with a few tunes ("Ten Year Night", "I Had Something", one other I think). It was an enjoyable set, although I've never really been able to get into Lucy as much as other artists. Richard came on second, accompanied by Lincoln Schleifer on the bass, which was a nice surprise. He opened with an inspired, flawless (I think) "Transit", which I was expecting thanks to other recent concert reports. I can't remember the exact order of the tunes, but they went something like this: --Transit --Are You Happy Now: very, very bizarre arrangement of this one. It was almost unrecognizable in the beginning, to me anyway, and seemingly to Lincoln and Lucy, who kept looking confused/amused throughout the song. I don't know music structure and theory the way that others on this list do, but man, it almost seemed like Richard started playing the beginning of another song, then bulled through and somehow changed things around to make the words fit the different chords and phrasing. I've heard many different presentations of AYHN, from fast and loose to wistful to downright dirge-like, but I've never heard anything like this one. I wish I had the musical vocabulary to describe how different it sounded, but I just don't. Lincoln looked like he was cracking up half the time, and Lucy kept shooting furtive puzzled glances at Richard...although my imagination may have been exaggerating both reactions. Anyone else's thoughts on this? --Last Fare of the Day: beautiful version, one of the best I've heard. --Fishing: another excellent performance --Deportee (my first time hearing that song, by Richard or anyone else) --Che Guevara ("completing the trilogy"): also excellent. --Cancion: lovely as always, complete with the usual description and translation of the song. (Although absent was the bit about how his love is "indicative", which always cracks me up.) --Wisteria: first time I've heard this live. Unfortunately, Richard botched many of the lines, somewhat detracting from the effect. It was still thrilling to hear it. --Big Muddy: lively and well-delivered. Missed a few lines, but it was barely noticeable. --Mavis: awesome, with some minor hesitation/repeating of lines. I always get a kick out of hearing this one live. More than any other, I feel that this song's studio recording and live performances have equal advantages and disadvantages. I love the clarinet and impromptu instruments in the studio, but I also love the live guitar solo that precedes the last part (taking the place of the studio's ambling clarinet bit) and Richard's voicework on the final repeated word of each verse. --1st encore song, Richard and Lucy together, was a beautiful "By Way of Sorrow" from Cry3. Richard's harmony absolutely makes the song for me, changing a pretty tune into a spine-tingling one. --2nd encore was "Cold Missouri Waters", which was *superb*. All in all, a terrific show. --Chris - -- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us). But there is this comfort: otherwise we should not know, or so much love, what we do love. I arrived an hour late but Richard was on second so I caught his whole set. Very good show....he played with that bass player Lincoln (insert last name). I know a few other listers were there and I will let them fill in more detail but a few comments on the show: "Deportees": This is one of my all time favorite songs and Richard does a very nice version. He did it as a self called "trilogy" with "Fishing" and "Che Shirt". All three were great "Cold Missouri Waters": This concluded the show with Lucy. Always nice to hear it. "There Goes Mavis": Nice to hear it back in the set "Transit": He opened with this as he did up in NH last week. Great version. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V7 #184 ***********************************
