Keep in mind that Richard has played this venue no less than a dozen times and actually grew up on Long Island, not all that far from this club. Just goes to show, once you think you've made it, someone does something to remind you that you've still got a long way to go. Or something like that. Can't wait to show Richard this. One for the scrapbook I'm sure. It was the best concert of his I've seen in years. Hard to put my finger exactly on what made it so great but it was a combination of things: he was relaxed and trying new things (lots of new things: a song he'd written at 2 a.m. the night before, a version of Deportees he said he'd never played in public, a blues song on a new guitar), didn't forget lyrics, wasn't enormously chatty but did have some brief amusing stories. Also no band, which is always a plus in my book. He came on stage (with no introduction) and started playing the riff from Transit and said that he was playing this one for those of us who had battled traffic to drive up to Maine that day, as he had. Then told us that he'd gotten a speeding ticket, because he'd gotten unused to thinking about such things living in Argentina (where he'd never known of anyone who had gotten a speeding ticket) and also because there were technology advances up here that he'd been unaware of (apparently the police car that ticketed him was going the other direction and had managed to accurately gauge his speed). I don't keep set lists, but some of the other songs he played were: Last Fare of the Day, So Says the Whippoorwill, AYHN, Cancion Sencilla, Fenario, Hazel's House, Mavis. Had an amazing run in which he played, first, Deportees, then followed it with Fishing, and then played what he said was the next in the series (Che Guevara T-Shirt). (also mentioned that the Che T-Shirt T-shirts he was selling (though not at this concert) were not flying off the shelves . . . ) Played One Man's Arkansas by my request (at the point at which he asked the audience for requests. Seemed *really* surprised to hear a request for that one, or perhaps it was that I mixed the state up and actually called out "one man's Idaho" . . .) The new song I can't recreate well enough to describe except it involved "on the mainland." Seemed to be written from the perspective of someone on a ship. (?) Perhaps the highlight for me was when he pulled out a new guitar -- electric (but very folk-y sounding; absolutely gorgous. I couldn't tell anything else about what kind it was). He said someone had given it to him at a gig. And that it wanted to play the blues, despite the fact that he doesn't play the blues. So he played a beautiful version of the blues song "sittin' on top of the world," which I later realized he must have played in DADGAD, because when he came on for an encore he picked up the new guitar and said "let's see if this can play anything other than blues" and played Reunion Hill in DADGAD without having retuned. Great concert! If some of you in the Boston area are going to the Lowell concert tonight, I'm planning to be picnicing with a guitar there beforehand, so come say hello. (If you can't recognize me from the guitar I'm also the one with really short hair and two long braided tails.) I'd love to go early and pick out a prime spot, but I'll be with some others who aren't too keen on it. We'll be getting there at 5:30ish-6:00ish; hopefully there'll still be spots left up front... - --Chris - -- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us). I wasn't going to go to Lowell (because I am not a fan of Lucy Kaplansky - just not my cup of tea) but after hearing that, I think I will go! I don't know if I can get there early but if you see me - I have on jeans and a Newport Folk Fest 2002 Tee shirt on today - say hi! I am obsessed with the song "Deportees" - I hope he plays it again! I have been to many shows, including the folk festival at Lowell. It's a great venue. If you want a seat up front, you have to get there way early but the venue is elevated so there are good seats everywhere. Oh, and if you're there awhile, bring a comfortable chair! :) On Aug 6, 2005, at 9:57 AM, Beth DeSombre wrote: > Had an amazing run in which he played, > first, Deportees, then followed it with Fishing, and then played what > he > said was the next in the series (Che Guevara T-Shirt). > Perhaps the highlight for me was when he pulled out a new guitar -- > electric (but very folk-y sounding; absolutely gorgous.
