It was less than a great experience. I got a young man who identified himself as a college intern. He seemed vaguely familiar with the fact that a proposal to cut NPR and PBS was in the works - but could not tell me the name or number of the proposed legislation - and DID NOT KNOW how Congressman Garrett was going to vote on the matter. He could not tell me how to find out how Congressman Garrett DID actually vote. He seemed to think the vote was gonna be Wednesday or maybe Thursday. He was polite enough and stuff - but he did not offer to transfer me to anybody who would know the answers to any of these questions. It kinda felt like I got the run-around. I'm sure he wrote down that I called on some piece of paper and that his supervisor looked at it at the end of the day - but is that all I should expect when I call my Congressman? Should I have been more aggressive and demanded to talk to someone on Congressman's Garrett's professional staff? When Congressman Garrett votes in favor of the cuts ( and he's a right-wing Christian Republican - so I think that he will ) - I may actually fire up a letter down to Washington to tell the guy how unhappy I was with his vote and how unhappy I was with the lack of information that a call to his office produced. I think the real problem here is that the Republicans have decide that both NPR and PBS are too far left for their liking - and that these cuts will actually happen ( in which case they win) - or they will serve as a "shot across the bow" - and that the PBS and NPR people will cut back on their "anti-Bush" stories - and things like the day Buster Bunny visited the little boy who had two mommies (in which case they win). In their view, they win either way. I am pretty pissed. Sorry - almost no Richard content - but the list has been slow lately anyway - - and Richard really only gets airplay on public radio stations ( of one kind or another) - - so this is kinda related. Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever heard Richard anytime anyplace on a COMMERCIAL RADIO STATION? My brother lives in Seattle. They have something out there they call "The Mountain" - which I have listened to while I was out there - and they play some contemporary folk music - but I have no memory of ever hearing Richard. There is no commercial radio station in the New York area that would play Richard Shindell. Not even at 4am if you called up and requested it. They would not have the CD in their library. The DJ has a computer print-out that tells him what to play next anyway. But you can hear "More than a Feeling" every hour on the hour. se ya.... It's not only well laid out, but it has a very personal touch. Her regular input is all over it. And she allows you to stream every song (not from The Story's albums tho) before you buy. You can't capture them, you just get to listen before you buy. It's also not over-run with Flash animations and other band-width-hogging pap that seem to be the rage for musician's websites these days. http://jonathabrooke.com/music/index.php john - -- John Cleirigh PO Box 1515 Felton, CA 95018 http://www.johncleirigh.com 831.239.5564 ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V7 #146 ***********************************
