The thing is, Cliff and Dar seem so unrehearsed and impromptu in their on-stage banter, whereas Vance is clearly in performance. I'm not naive, I realize that both Cliff and Dar repeat many of their funny stories. But I've also seen both venture into comic realms that were unmistakably of the moment. I also think Richard has become quite the jester or jokester, if you will, a talent he seemed to have kept hidden in his earlier years. Perhaps touring with Dar and Lucy brought out his naturally funny persona. I love Fred Eaglesmith's song with that great line about his girlfriend telling everyone "that I'm a PHD. But it stands for Post Hole Digger, that ain't exactly a degree." Funny, funny stuff. John, I almost didn't post my question for just that reason--it seems a little off topic, though it was prompted by the discussion of RS' preferences. Thanks for the info, and, believe me, I was thinking of something under 1K! My possession of anything more would be an insult to the instrument. He was so funny that it started to seem like he was fitting the songs in between the comedy routines, most of which were clearly off the top of his head. Oh, the music was great too. I'm not exactly sure which CD, but I'm thinking that it's on her latest Beauty of the Rain, in her intro to Fishing in the Morning, but I could be wrong. Now folks are going to think that guitar-talk is forbidden on the list, when it's really anything BUT. ANY topic that strays too far (and too long) from the music of Richard Shindell is probably not right for this list, but I'd say that guitar-talk would have to do some serious long-term straying before it would be unwelcome here. So, strum on!!! "Cliff's a really happy guy with a creek behind his house, a little red barbecue and neighbors (like me) who love him. However, this song is the midnight truck stop phone call of the soul." While Dar has told some of her stories time and time again, a good deal of her wit and charm is totally spontaneous.
