Thanks for all the talk about Famous Blue Raincoat... probably my favorite Leonard Cohen song... finally heard Richard do it last Thursday at The Turning Point... he does a great version... song about a love triangle ( to my ears anyway) hard to figure out the whole story... but clearly 60s Greenwich Village stuff... also cool versions by Jennifer Warnes and Tori Amos... speaking of Richard and covers: hey... I happened to catch Chip Robertson ( of this list) in performance at a place called Beantowne Gourmet in beautiful fashionable Allendale, New Jersey ( my hometown actually). Turns out Chip has a career has a singer/ songwriter "his own self " . He does some Richard covers - I remember hearing a very nice very of "Abulita" - and I think he did "Are You Happy Now" - and maybe "You Stay Here". I didn't actually take notes - sorry. Pretty good. As it happens, he is appearing TONIGHT ( Friday April 22) - at the legendary Postscript Coffeehouse at Columbia University. For info - check out: _http://www.columbia.edu/cu/postcrypt/coffeehouse/schedules/_ (http://www.columbia.edu/cu/postcrypt/coffeehouse/schedules/) ( you will have to click and scroll to find the listing for April 22, 2005) and also: _http://www.chiprobertson.com/_ (http://www.chiprobertson.com/) see ya.... bob paterson ( PS - Chip and I are not best buds or anything - and I decided to post his website and mention the Postscript gig. I feel little listings by people who cover an artist are well within the subject area of a listserv group. I have seen it done on the Dar-list and the Joni-list, why not the Richard- list? ) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Apr 2005 07:42:43 -0700 (PDT) From: Gerry Evans Subject: [RS] "Jenny sings Lenny" In my opinion, the Jennifer Warnes tribute album mentioned earlier is the best place to start with Leonard Cohen. The two of them duet on a chilling version of 'Joan of Arc'..this gives you a chance to judge whether you can then progress to 'Songs of Love and Hate'. This could well be my favourite album released in the eighties (wasn't a great deal of competition though!) gerry Tired of spam? Yahoo! (I know, I know he should go somewhere he rarely ever plays than play again in MA.) The rest of the summer they have outdoor concerts for ten dollars to support the Park Rangers for the state park of Lowell. Anyway, I noticed that Richard and Lucy Kaplansky will be doing a double bill (most years they have gotten John Gorka and Cheryl Wheeler). I hadn't seen this anywhere else so I thought I would pass it along. The show is August 6th. It is a great place to see music - outside in the summer. Though bring lawn chairs and go early as many locals spend the day there picnicing. A good lineup for the series this year...it also has Keb Mo, Catie Curtis, and Richie Havens coming. Tired of spam?
