The ruling gives a huge boost to those who own the rights to recorded musical performancesalmost always large music companies, not the musicians who made the recordings. The Court of Appeals groundbreaking April 5 decision held that rights to performances recorded before 1972 are protected under state common law, even after those recordings have been put on the market. The ruling, Capitol Records Inc. v. Naxos of America, No. 30, increases the duration of protection for a treasure trove of recorded music, keeping it out of the public domain until 2067. This benefits the companies that own the rights to all pre-1972 recorded performances and prevents others from releasing their own versions of these early recordings............... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Apr 2005 09:24:04 -0400 From: Jamie Younghans / John McDonnell Subject: [RS] RE:Turning Point Hey all, Wanted to post about the Turning Point set but didn't have time before. Nice review from Chip, and Greg, I guess you finally got to hear Famous Blue Raincoat. Very jealous. I'm a big (early) Leonard Cohen fan (my first concert was LC), and I'm not a big fan of covers of his songs, but I have no doubt RS does FBR justice. I hope he's still doing it by November. I will be screaming it from the audience, regardless. In fact, I would love to hear him do some others--e.g., Sisters of Mercy (lyrically, one of the best songs ever), Last Year's Man, Take This Longing, A Singer Must Die, and one other that strikes me as very Shindellian--The Partisan. The Kate Wolf Folk Festival is in beautiful Northern California. The Strawberry Festival is in Yosemite twice a year, I believe. We are not as deprived as you might think,, although we are certainly not as well off as Boston. Priscilla Herdman sings a lovely one (title, I believe, is simply "Desaparecidos"--unfortunately I can't remember who wrote it) on the album "Seasons of Change". IIRC (it's been a while since I listened, and I'm not at home to check), the song "Rice and Beans" on that album may be relevant as well.
