I agree, tonight's show was very very good. Richard was in fine form, and many of his songs were performed with intensity and passion that rivals anything I've seen him do before. Adam has provided the songlist; I'll complement it by adding my thoughts on some of the songs. So Says -- with the Father Brown verse Transit -- odd, I've never heard this song as anything but a closer or encore song. He explained how he was trying to do everything "backward", and how someone had slipped a note under his door to request the tune. Richard also provided a humorous description of how a nun named Maria from St. Agnes's Church in Patterson, NJ wrote him a letter saying "Dear Richard: please drive slowly." Pretty funny. Are you happy now? -- performed in a completely different way than I've ever heard before. Very calm and hushed, almost solemn, without the slightest humor in the delivery. He provided the backstory to the song, concerning a daycare worker whom he was dating, her instructions to her children to stop by Richard's place for candy on Halloween, his mortification upon realizing that he forgot the candy, and him sitting in the dark as "wave after wave" of children came excitedly and left dejectly upon seeing that no one was (apparently) home. Ascent Reunion Hill -- Richard noted that he wrote this for Joan Baez. Simple Song -- he gave a pretty comprehensive explanation of the lyrics and underlying ideas beforehand. Big Muddy Fenario Fishing -- delivered with intensity. Che Guevera Tee Shirt (he had the shirts) -- perhaps the finest performance that I've heard of this song. Beautiful and powerful. Described it as a possible prequel to "Fishing." Mary Magdelene -- also very beautiful. It made a friend of mine (Shindell newbie) cry. One Man's Arkansas -- the new song he's working on now. Melikes. Storms on the Ocean There Goes Mavis -- lovely rendition. Beyond the Iron Gate (encore) All in all, a wonderful show. Richard was in a great mood, very witty and charming and playful, and very much into his music. The show was an excellent way to usher in April (and a badly-needed weekend...Adam, I hope you're sound asleep right now. :) ). --Chris - -- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us). But there is this comfort: otherwise we should not know, or so much love, what we do love. I imagine the fish out of water is the only fish to have an inkling of water." - --J.R.R. If so please contact me as I would love to trade for it (as I am in Europe I do not get the chance to see RS live as often as you guys in the US) Have a nice one from september 04 to trade.
