Jumping into the kids' music discussion: When I was growing up, some of my favorite songs were ones with animals in them (regardless of what the songs were actually about!): e.g., the Beatles' "Blackbird," "Piggies," and "Rocky Raccoon"; also Peter Gabriel's "Shock the Monkey." I also loved Marshall Crenshaw's eponymous album (with "Someday, Someway" and "Cynical Girl"), and Beleza Tropical (a collection of Brazilian music, compiled by David Byrne). The Kinks were a big favorite too ("Mr. Pleasant," "A Dedicated Follower of Fashion," "Autumn Almanac," etc.). And of course, Little Creatures, by Talking Heads (especially "Stay Up Late": "baby, baby, please let me hold him / i wanna make him stay up all night / sister, sister, he's just a plaything / we wanna make him stay up all night / yeah we do" -- a fun song for an older sibling ;) ). And as for newer music, Brian Joseph writes some very funny songs that kids enjoy (judging by the reaction of the kids at a house concert I went to a couple years ago). http://www.brianjosephmusic.com/ The title track on his most recent album, King of Echo Park, is a lovely lullaby. Just as pretty and soothing as "Grey Green," in my opinion. :) That was fun! - -Gina ************************ "now my voice won't sing, and my tears won't cry, your disciple waits, for any good advice..." - -n.f. & t.f. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2005 13:16:18 -0800 From: "Bill Chmelir" Subject: [RS] Best Albums for Children??? Thanks to everyone who offered all of the great music suggestions for me to play for my son Calvin. Big Cal had a happy birthday and a fun birthday party. He will soon be playing with his new blocks to the beat of your music tips. I really appreciate your help, and I'll let you know what his favorites are. I've never seen or heard We're About 9 before, but it sounds like a great way to check them out. Do we have to buy a ticket in advance or do we pay when we get there?
