He actually called me on the phone to rave about it. He was using words like awesome, amazing, and kickass. I couldn't believe my ears! I also sent him the Willy Porter live cd. He liked that one too. Carrie in KC ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Feb 2005 09:57:04 -0600 From: "Mark A. Douglas" Subject: RE: [RS] Compilation You know, this actually brings up an interesting conundrum in general: how to break someone into the contemporary folk music scene. I started the girlfriend off with an Ellis Paul show. She fell in love with it. Then some Eddie from Ohio. Again, no worries; and it was then that I sprung Richard on her. I started with Vuelta because it was the latest at the time.. But she's going from radio fare (pop, rock and samesuch derivativeness) to the folk scene, and as someone mentioned, the locally don't help much, or at least not the one's she gets around to. It's some sort of indictment when Borders and Barnes&Noble are the best sources of music*. On the upside, it's soon Spring here, and there are plenty of live shows around the corner. Peace Mark * - for those familiar with the DFW area, there is an admirable selection at Bill's Records, and the Virgin and Tower superstores are fairly stocked, but: they're also a planned trip from the 'burbs, and so, y'know... As I tell her, live venues are the best place to buy because you absolutely know where the money's going in those instances... - -----Original Message----- From: owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org [mailto:owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Ron Alderfer Sent: Saturday, February 19, 2005 8:23 AM To: shindell-list Subject: [RS] Compilation Courier....Courier....live CD....Courier.... I've started listening to a lot of Latin music, and the more CDs I buy, the more new (to me) Latin artists pop up in my "recommendations" section on the website. I listen to clips from each, and have discovered some great artists that way. (And a few I don't like at all.) For someone just getting into the folk music scene, this might be a good way to find new folk artists. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Feb 2005 12:50:28 EST From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] RS compilation >> Kenworth of My Dreams (from a recording that RG sent to me, featuring Rad on piano; it's the only version that I really like, and if I didn't have that version I'd substitute this and leave this song out entirely. Rad completely transforms the song, to my ears at least. Don't know where RG got the recording from...) << From a compilation disc called "Treestar Revue" on BCN Records. The song was from a great show Richard (along with Lucy and Rad) did at Mt. Kisco's Treestar Coffeehouse on 2/23/96. The disc also features Jay Ungar & Molly Mason doing "Lover's Waltz," Dar Williams performing "Arrival," Lucy Kaplansky's "The Tide," and some other goodies. Unfortunately, the super stores, like B&N have wreaked havoc on both the book and music independents. Add on stores like Best Buy, etc, there are not a whole lot of indies. Some notable exceptions exist in New York and even here in suburbia (Vintage Vinyl in Edison, NJ) but they are rare. Such a shame but the upside, of course is the internet. I ususally find new artists from the list, from cd baby, from folkways, etc., then find their cds on Amazon, and listen to clips. If I like it I log into my local library and checkout the online catalog for my new discoveries. I don't find them all by any means, but I have found quite a number...actually alot, including Courier. You then place a hold on the cds, pick them up and listen! A great try before you buy.
