So I can only make suggestions based on what I remember I liked when I was between 3 and 7 years old. (Sorry the brain cells for years 0-3 have deteriorated too much.) So, betw '56 and '60 (my formative music years), I loved Pat Boone, Perry Como, and Bobby Darin. :-) I really liked "Splish Splash" and "Mack the Knife". I don't remember specific Pat Boone or Perry Como songs that I liked but I do remember just liking the sounds of their voices when they sang. Later on, I was into the Beatles and the whole "British invasion". But, mixed in with that, I also liked The New Christy Minstrels. Many hears later, I became friends with my neighbor's 3 year-old son. He loved to listen to Devo's "Whip It" over and over and over. He's in his 20s now ... married ... doing well ... no bad side effects from listening to Devo at the tender age of 3. :-) Jean ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2005 11:36:11 -0500 From: "greg z" Subject: [RS] Best Albums for Children??? Intelligent, interesting lyrics and excellent musicianship. Two of my favorites are "Around the World and Back Again" and "In My Hometown." I'm glad to see John Denver's name brought up a couple of times on the list recently. I grew up listening to his music and I love it as much now as I ever did. Definitely an all-time favorite of mine! I want to put together a Richard compilation CD for some friends who do, or will, listen to folk music, but really have no clue about Richard. I'm looking for opinions on the songs to include, which version (if there is more than one), and an idea of order. (The first, second, and last songs are the hardest, I think. They set the whole tone of the CD). For example - please no yelling, and don't make those faces at me! - Cut #1: studio version of AYHN? Somewhat humorous, uptempo, Richard is in good voice, etc. Or maybe something like "Summer Wind, Cotton Dress" instead. Did I hear someone say something about the Weather?? And only 14 songs or so? Good grief, this may have to be a box set compliation.... Have fun, and thanks in advance! It's practically a Greatest Hits collection, with pretty great versions of most everything you'd want to give someone to turn them on to Richard. And since they're not hard core folkies, the CD kicks ass enough ("Arrowhead," "Fishing") plus has familiar enough covers ("Willin'," "Sandy") to keep 'em interested. They set the whole tone of the CD). It just so happens that I have exactly this kind of compilation stored, that I use to "hook" people onto Richard's music. It may not be the most representative look at his music, but I think it does a fairly good job of covering the range. It is 16 songs long, but it fits onto a CD just fine. (Note: this is all pre-Vuelta stuff, and it is largely built around Courier (especially in the later half), which--as Ron mentioned--is practically a best-of already.) 1. The Courier (Courier) 2. You Stay Here (SNP) 3. Wisteria (SNP...yes, this is a downer for the beginning of the CD, but I've found that it rounds out a strong 1-2-3 combo that *always* draws the listener in.) 4. Next Best Western (Courier) 5. Kenworth of My Dreams (from a recording that RG sent to me, featuring Rad on piano; it's the only version that I really like, and if I didn't have that version I'd substitute this and leave this song out entirely. Rad completely transforms the song, to my ears at least. Don't know where RG got the recording from...) 6. Cold Missouri Waters (CCC) 7. Nora (Courier) 8. Shades of Gray (from the WFUV "City Folk Live III" compilation) 9. Summer Wind, Cotton Dress (either version, depending on the target listener...I usually go with the Courier version, which is more poignant to my ears) 10. Reunion Hill (Courier) 11. Fishing (Courier) 12. Fleur-de-lis (Courier) 13. Mary Magdalen (Courier...yes, I am practically following the CD now) 14. Are You Happy Now? (Courier) 15. Transit (Courier) 16. Calling the Moon (SNP...this is my all-time favorite Shindell closer.) - --Chris - ------------------------------------------------------------- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us).
