For contemporaneous: Peter Mulvey's version of Dar's "The Ocean" Patty Griffin's "Peter Pan" or Carrie Newcomer's "Gathering of Spirits" Vance Gilbert's "Taking it All to Tennessee" (the live version on 'Somerville Live') And Redbird's "Ithaca" Or: Richard's "A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress" Lori McKenna's "Bible Song" Carter/Grammer - "Happytown" And Greg Brown's "Way My Baby Calls My Name" Good luck. Four songs is way, way, way too few to represent what folk music. I'm doing a demo for a radio folk music show. Imagine it's Thursday around 7 p.m. What four songs would be representative of the best of folk, showing the wonderful flavors and variety, at the same time fitting in with the time of day...most folks having worked all day, perhaps just finished or finishing dinner, maybe just having dinner. The show goes from 7 to 9, but only using four songs to represent the time frame. I would love suggestions for four songs, an excellent mix maybe representing folk at it's best. I'm just brainstorming here. Something old, something new, etc. Thanks for your help in advance. I only own one of Peter Mulvey's CDs, so I don't know his music all that well, but I love "The Ocean". Easily the most hauntingly painful song I can think of, for personal reasons, and yet beautiful for exactly that reason. What's Peter's take on it? - --Chris - ------------------------------------------------------------- "We were born in a dark age out of due time (for us). It's more of an interpretation than a cover of Dar's song. It's on Peter's Ten Thousand Mornings-- an album of covers recording in the Boston subway (the T). Buy it, you wouldn't be disappointed. Yes, four songs narrows it down and makes it very difficult, as does adding the addition of a time of day it will be featured...we're imagining it's near or just after the dinner hour on a weekday. Someone suggested Richard's The Weather. I hope I can find it! Thanks again, Kelly ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V7 #45 **********************************
