The only time it really gets dull here is when we're about 18 months away from a new CD release! ;-) Anywho, as you are a "newbie", I'd be interested to hear how you came to find out who RS was, and what drew you to his music, etc. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2005 15:18:23 EST From: RG959@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re: St. Louis In a message dated 2/5/05 10:33:15 AM Central Standard Time, owner-shindell-list-digest@smoe.org writes: > That said, did anyone go to the folk festival in St. Louis last night? > Just > wondering how it went. There will be wll over 100,000 there today. I am betting he is. I'd love to talk about the live Shindell music I just heard like the rest of you get to on a regular basis but he never comes to the places I'm living anymore. Not since with Joan Baez in Boulder. Colorado, Alabama, and now Oregon in the last 2 years. Hopefully I have a decent shot at seeing him in Oregon or maybe the Bay area this year. I love the music in Big Muddy. Those quick hand drums ( I don't know what those are called. some kind of congas?) are awesome. I just think the message is written from the perspective of someone who hasn't served. Was the original artist a soldier? By the way, Lieutenants are in charge of 99% of the Army's "good platoons". Lieutenants are platoon leaders. Captains are Company Commanders. Details details.... I always say that if you can't laugh at yourself and at the thought of Ted Kennedy preaching ethics... I don't understand how anyone can give that guy a pass on the death of a 19-year-old girl and try to tell me that it is wrong and illegal to get rid of Saddam Hussein. I'd like to appologize to Israel for the misspelling. I've obviously become to dependant on spell check. If you're looking for lefty nastiness, look no further than the Mark Morford article posted on this list the other day. If you don't consider it to be nasty then you and I come from different planets. There's been nothing but praise paid on to the article on this list. As a soldier, and as the friend of and the brother to men and women (not "Children") serving currently in Kosovo, Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanastan, Germany, Korea, Honduras, and the states, I was offended by the article. The nasiness in todays politics runs both ways. Don't kid yourself. I have belonged to the Shindell list for several years. Sometimes I contribute...other times I lurk. But as of late, it has lost its focus on the one thing we all care for - Richard's music. I, for one, am not interested in Shiites, Republican vs. Democrats, etc.....I get enough of that from the daily news. We should all revisit the wonderful music that Richard provides instead of wasting time on these other issues. Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2005 19:26:08 -0500 From: Vanessa Wills Subject: Re: [RS] RE: shindell-list-digest V7 #38 Exactly how are we supposed to discuss Richard's decision to record "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy" as a protest against the war in Iraq without mentioning the war in Iraq? I am sympathetic to the complaint that the balance of political to strictly-music-related posts can sometimes weigh too heavily on one side than the other. But please don't make it seem like that balance is so easy to maintain; as though there's one thing, "Richard's Music," and this other thing, "The World," and they are totally separate and insulated from one another. Frankly, I think it's an insult to songs like "Che Guevara T-Shirt," "Abuelita," and "You Stay Here" to suggest that it's even possible to discuss them in any deep or exhaustive way without touching on the real political issues of the day. - --Vanessa On Sat, 5 Feb 2005 19:03:41 -0500, Jeffrey Campbell wrote: > I have to agree with KarenZ on this issue.
