Glenn  McDonald, who wrote the very excellent (and now sadly discontinued) 
"The War  Against Silence" column, calls "Che Guevara T-Shirt" one of the best 
songs of  2004.  And I agree with almost everything Glenn McDonald  says.

Cool. I was intrigued. So I went to "The War against Silence" and found the  
following:

Richard Shindell: "Che Guevara T-Shirt" (from Vuelta)
Manic Street  Preachers: "Glasnost" (from Lifeblood)
 
If we need wars, we have our own principles to  misconstrue.

OK - It's 5:49am and my brain is not fully awake ( as if it ever is) - but  I 
am not sure I follow this. I have never really felt like I had a good  handle 
on what the hell Che Guevera T-shirt was about anyway - except that at  the 
end there is a clear negative reference to The Patriot Act - and The War  
Against Terror. 
 
( The narrator of the song is not a dangerous man - and not really a big  
threat to the United States economically either - at least not all by himself -  
and yet he ends up in prison in Miami with a bunch of mean-ass Cuban-American  
interrogators questioning him - perhaps very "aggressively" - ala  Gonzalez.)
 
But what does " If we need wars, we have our own principles to misconstrue"  
mean?
 
And who or what are "The Manic Street Preachers"?
I have never heard of them - anybody else?
 
OK - someone who studied English or Literature or Communications in College  
- - here's your chance to show off.

I read it as that if we feel like we need to go to war, we can misconstrue our principles in the name of that war. We're taking away freedom in a war for freedom. Or as the old saying from the Vietnam war went: "we had to destroy the village, to save the village".

As I recall, Glenn thought Fishing was one of the best songs ever written.
