I love the live version of Transit. The power of prayer is my interpretation. Go nuns! This summer I visited the Poor Claires because of my mother. I shared a good visit and quiet reflection on Claire and St. Francis. It was a gorgeous green living peaceful time. Driving the Parkway in bumper to bumper traffic this past summer helps think about Transit too. Out here in California while on a road trip I believe I did see the Kenworth of my dreams. Wow! I never quite knew what one was. There was an amazing bright yellow one with an incredibly comfy looking double cab sleeping quarter -- or however you call it. Fancy paint trim and accessories. I haven't ever driven a big rig either -- but I used to think that I could handle the job. Just travel and listen to good music. Richard's music is great for traveling. To me the words are equally important as the music. Mavis grabbed me like that as did Fishing. I think I hear the words right away. That's why his music lasts with me. Cold Missouri Waters was my first a ha! with Richard too. I was first a Dar Williams fan. And that was by chance by giving a listen at Borders too. Now it is so fun to just enter the folk music section and listen to as many things as possible. I trade out here and there and finally buy something new. (One or more.) I don't have all of Richard's music yet, so am looking forward to hearing some more new music for me! I have Courier and Somewhere Near Patterson and Vuelta and Cry Cry Cry. What is the next one to get? I noticed Vuelta is getting some more critical acclaim. That one seems like a good gift to give for the holidays. At the moment I am listening to the Limelighters "Through Children's Eyes" -- brings me back to childhood. "Under the lollipop, lollipop, lollipop, lolli-lolli-lolli-pop tree." I am glad my dad liked music so much. The Kingston Trio is another old time favorite group of singer songwriters. Well, I am rambling. Richard has the voice and the heart and soul. We are fortunate to listen. I look forward to his next visit to California. He was amazing in Santa Barbara this fall. Or maybe I can get to Argentina. Does he play publicly there? I'll check the website again. Happy holidays. Here is my list: Richard Shindell, Vuelta Martin Simpson, Definitive Collection Garnet Rogers, Shining Thing Dirk Powell, Home Again Eric Bibb, Friends Richie Havens, Grace of the Sun Old Crow Medicine Show Crooked Still Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer, Music for Two Heartland Greg Brown, Hills of California and Honey in the Lion's Head Iris DeMent, Lifeline Patty Griffin, Impossible Dream Mary Chapin Carpenter, Between Here and Gone Everything by Yo Yo Ma (though that's not folk) B Gallagher wrote: Adam wrote: way too many CD's), and I think "Vuelta" is the best Cd I have heard all year...by far. What other CD's were great this year? Would be interested in what I missed.... > - ---- Off the top of my head and in no particular order, here are a few that I have bought this year: Iain Matthews - Zumbach's Coat Not a pure 'folk' album from this former member of Fairport Convention. Excellent, sophisticated. With a song titled "Power", about guess who. The Kennedys - Stand Cool, uplifting collection from this dynamic duo including a great, perhaps definitive, take of Dave Carter's "When I Go" Eric Andersen - The Street Was Always There First of what is to be a three disc Great American Song series. "Street" has EA singing new versions of songs from the Bleecker Street days. Pete Kennedy on guitar. Judging from this volume, which I got just yesterday, this series will be a must have for serious 'folks'. Caroline Aiken - Shaken (2002, so I just got it last April) Expressive, authentic voice and guitar from another relatively unknown and talented working musician. A Thinking Indigo Girl, but Caroline came first. LucyKa - The Red Thread Great recording featuring the polished guitar of Jon Herington (Steely Dan) and a familiar sounding background vocalist. I LOVE Lucy's singing of Dave Carter's "Cowboy Singer". Too bad it is followed by the throwaway country kitsch "Hole in My Head", which brakes the thread that flows through the rest of the album. Terence Martin - Sleeper Understated poetry set to music. How life goes. Metaphorically speaking. Chris Smither - Train Home Chris' latest features more great Smither in good voice and shimmering blue guitar. Straight ahead read of Desolation Row with Bonnie Raitt. And a fine version of "Crocodile Man". Hubert Sumlin - I Know You Released back in '98, I bought it from the Blues Master himself at a show that also featured Honeyboy Edwards. Caroline Doctorow - Carmel Valley Ride Strong outing from LI local that is "inspired by the life and work of Mimi and Richard Farina". Features a breathy singing of Dylan's "I Want You". Compilation - Gotta Serve Somebody, The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan You have to hear this collection of Dylan's songs sung by the Best of today's gospel singers. Unbelievable. Even Maier Kahana would wade in the Water. Happy Listening! Bart Yahoo! Mail - You care about security. So do we. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Dec 2004 20:55:46 -0500 From: Lisa Davis - home Subject: Re: [RS] The RS Guitar Sale continues. So what's with all these guitar sales? What is he, fickle? Has to buy a new guitar every week or something ?:) Or keeping the wolf from the door through appreciation in value due to singer-songwriter proximity? You guitarists amongst us, explain? Lisa Davis Jeff Gilson wrote: > RonG wrote: > > >>Now that Richard's lovely Lowden is in Boston Beth's hands, we have > > another fine instrument for sale.
