As some of you know, I'm an organizer for NYC's Local 802 of the musicians' union. We're mobilizing in support of the recording artists on the Knitting Factory's record labels. These indie artists have been cheated out of years' worth of royalties (some of them have NEVER received a penny!) Last year, during a management transition, the company threw thousands of cds into the dumpster without offering them back to the musicians first. Many of these artists have sought to reclaim their masters (as contractually promised) only to be turned away emptyhanded. In other words, we're talking about struggling indie artists who are told that their work isn't sold anywhere and aren't receiving any money for it, but also aren't permitted to press or sell the work themselves. Untenable! This isn't a union issue per se. Most of these artists aren't members of the musicians' union and none of these albums were recorded under union contract. Still, we need to advance the interests of music and musicians, period. We've provided legal counsel and filed a lawsuit on behalf of the KF artists, but it's always more effective to take it to the streets. For those of you in the New York area, we're staging a huge demonstration in front of the Knitting Factory next Wednesday at noon. Eddie Wallace and Mark Ribot will be performing (among many others), many local and state politicos will be there, the famous rat will be out, and WNYC has expressed interest in recording the whole shebang for the PRI show "The Next Big Thing". This should be huge, with lots of wonderful music and great press coverage. The musicians will also announce an upcoming boycott of the club and the labels. Even if you're not local, check out http://www.takeittothebridge.com or email me off-list. There's a petition you can sign and a lot of background information. I'm a rabid music lover myself, and I've seen many many wonderful shows at the Knitting Factory, but my first loyalty will always be to the artists. Richard is a handsome man. That doesn't mean that if some other man is handsome, then Richard must look like him, because they're both handsome! Kevin Spacey? John Cusack?! What?!? Tricia, you are not alone. - --V On Fri, 10 Dec 2004 12:13:18 -0800, Jean Walker wrote: > John Cusack looks way more like Richard than Spacey does. > > jean > > > > > "I've always thought that Richard looks a TON like Kevin Spacey." > > > > Wow, I really don't see this. The comparison to Kevin Spacey is something that just hit me the very first time I saw him. I had a great view, was very excited to see my first Richard concert, hadn't really focused on what he looks like...and then when he walked out on stage, I leaned over and whispered to a friend "wow, it's Kevin Spacey on guitar!" Granted, Richard doesn't look anything like Spacey in any still photos that I've seen; it's the way his face moves, how he smiles, how he speaks, etc., that brings the comparison leaping to the fore. I don't see John Cusack at all, for the record. (This is funny, I'm getting a kick out of this.) - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Dec 2004 00:27:26 -0500 From: Hopedancing@aol.com Subject: [RS] Kevin Spacey: Musical beginnings Not that this counts as much, but there may be a "musical connection" between Kevin Spacey and Richard. I went to high school with Kevin Spacey. Both Kevin and Mare Winnigham were discovered by Hollywood in their senior year high school theatrical performance of "The Sound of Music." This was 1977, I believe. Mare played "Maria" and Kevin Spacey was "Captain von Trapp." They both sang... beautifully. I know for a fact that Kevin Spacey has a musical background... not sure about John Cusack, though :) Candace in California ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V6 #310 ***********************************
