Hey, I saw this on CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Music/12/06/music.guthrie.hanukah.ap/index.html about discovering Woody Guthrie's lost cache of Hanukkah songs---no kidding! The Klezmatics have recorded them & are performing them w/Arlo. - ---Tricia ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Dec 2004 13:32:11 -0500 From: DrKFeatherstone@aol.com Subject: [RS] Re : shindell-list-digest V6 #303 Hi - read Scott's post about the 'Che-guevara t-shirt' t-shirts. Any chance of geting hold of one in the UK? I've been banging on about Shindellmusic over here for a while, so I might as well walk the t-shirt.... Thanks for any info. She has also accompanied me to Greg Brown. A few weeks ago, I brought my 11 year old to Terence Martin, where she collected the money at the door! The family as a whole has only seen Mr. Shindell once, at the outdoors Heckscher Park show, Huntington, NY. Not to imply that Lisa is not a good parent, if her child rebels. My kids like their share of their music too. But, just open up that 'record' collection to them. Saturday found my younger daughter listening to Lori McKenna (with RS backing on a track). Now, if I could only get my wife to some more shows... - --- Last week, Lisa wrote: PS how is it the rest of you seem to have children who dutifully and rapturously attended Richard Shindell concerts and everything? My 13-year-old sister absolutely loves Lucy Kaplansky, which rocks. Of course, she's also into what's-her-name, Lizzie McGuire, so I guess she's got a good balance going on. - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Dec 2004 18:23:34 -0500 From: Vanessa Wills Subject: Re: [RS] Good Parenting All those who have bounced around the room to Hilary (Lizzie McGuire) Duff's album, raise your hands! ::raises hand:: - --V On Mon, 06 Dec 2004 14:27:57 -0500, rfoxwell@wso.williams.edu wrote: <> ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Dec 2004 16:19:23 -0800 (PST) From: adam plunkett Subject: Re: [RS] While we're on Arlo... Wow sounds like we were at the sme show. I was in the back left! It was neat to see lots of posts mentioning other artists. I saw Eric Anderson mentioned who has a cool new album, which features a lot of covers from the Greenwich Village days. Chris Smither was also mentioned and he is very good and his live album is one of the best live albums I have heard. Speaking of albums, I was looking at all the albums I bought in 2004 (I buy way too many CD's), and I think "Vuelta" is the best Cd I have heard all year...by far. What other CD's were great this year? Would be interested in what I missed.... rfoxwell@wso.williams.edu wrote: Quoting adam plunkett : > I saw Arlo at the intimate Club Passim in Cambridge Mass(he played for a > week) and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. On Saturday Isabel and I picked up our road buddy Chris Chin, braved the merge to the Turnpike, and headed to Merchantville, NJ to see We're About 9. They were in their usual great form and spirit, and put on a terrific show for what had to be, for them, a disappointing crowd in volume (but not in appreciation). Among their covers were two Shindell tunes, their familiar a capella version of Money For Floods, and a stunning take on Last Fare of the Day. This is the second time I've heard them do Last Fare, and I was just slightly afraid the novelty would wear off the second time. Not a chance. Their version is a real winner. Rumor has it they're playing somewhere in the New York area in late February. On to Sunday, when we took 80 West for about 50 yards before veering onto the Palisades and up to The Turning Point for Tracy Grammer. Another excellent show. Tracy is becoming more confident and open on stage every time we see her. She has begun to mix in more non-Dave Carter tunes, and her interplay with Jim Henry is a pleasure to watch. While there were no Richard covers, his presence was felt in the second verse of The Verdant Mile, where Tracy refers to Richard's So Says The Whippoorwill. We has a million other things to do this weekend, but I'm glad we found the time to see these two shows. Excellent, sophisticated. With a song titled "Power", about guess who. The Kennedys - Stand Cool, uplifting collection from this dynamic duo including a great, perhaps definitive, take of Dave Carter's "When I Go" Eric Andersen - The Street Was Always There First of what is to be a three disc Great American Song series. "Street" has EA singing new versions of songs from the Bleecker Street days. Pete Kennedy on guitar. Judging from this volume, which I got just yesterday, this series will be a must have for serious 'folks'. Caroline Aiken - Shaken (2002, so I just got it last April) Expressive, authentic voice and guitar from another relatively unknown and talented working musician. A Thinking Indigo Girl, but Caroline came first. LucyKa - The Red Thread Great recording featuring the polished guitar of Jon Herington (Steely Dan) and a familiar sounding background vocalist. I LOVE Lucy's singing of Dave Carter's "Cowboy Singer". Too bad it is followed by the throwaway country kitsch "Hole in My Head", which brakes the thread that flows through the rest of the album. Terence Martin - Sleeper Understated poetry set to music. How life goes. Metaphorically speaking. Chris Smither - Train Home Chris' latest features more great Smither in good voice and shimmering blue guitar. Straight ahead read of Desolation Row with Bonnie Raitt. And a fine version of "Crocodile Man". Hubert Sumlin - I Know You Released back in '98, I bought it from the Blues Master himself at a show that also featured Honeyboy Edwards. Caroline Doctorow - Carmel Valley Ride Strong outing from LI local that is "inspired by the life and work of Mimi and Richard Farina". Features a breathy singing of Dylan's "I Want You". Compilation - Gotta Serve Somebody, The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan You have to hear this collection of Dylan's songs sung by the Best of today's gospel singers. Unbelievable. Even Maier Kahana would wade in the Water. Happy Listening! He played it in Cleveland but I was too dazed to figure it out at the time and did not know that it was in pagan tuning, so, I might be able to get it if someone knew the fret of the capo or some of the chords. One more passing thought that I forgot to post after the Cleveland concert, Richard sang the three words, "luna, luna, llena" from the middle of the song "Che Guevarra T-shirt" again right after the end of the song. It probably didn't mean much to anyone else, but I thought it was cool and it gave me a "deja vous" about another song, not necessarily of his, that I can't place right now. brian. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V6 #305 ***********************************
