Living in Mass. I've been fortunate to see the Guthrie troupe many times. One particular song of his which strikes me is about the Soviet Union's war in Afghanistan. It reminds me so much of our current war situation(s). WHEN A SOLDIER MAKES IT HOME words and music by Arlo Guthrie Halfway around the world tonight In a strange and foreign land A soldier packs his memories As he leaves Afghanistan And back home they don't know too much There's just no way to tell I guess you had to be there For to know that war was hell Chorus: And there won't be any victory parades For those that's coming back They'll fly them in at midnight And unload the body sacks And the living will be walking down A long and lonely road Because nobody seems to care these days When a soldier makes it home They'll say it wasn't easy Just another job well done As the government in Kabul falls To the sounds of rebel guns And the faces of the comrades Being blown out of the sky Leaves you bitter with the feeling That they didn't have to die There is another verse, but I conclude there with those last 4 lines which seem the most poignant to me. BTW, like the Group W quiz, another Arlo trivia question - what are Arlo Guthrie fans known as?? My guess is that if I showed up at the Buenos Aires show, he'd investigate getting a restraining order. ;-) RG It is very strange, and very melancholy, that the paucity of human pleasures should persuade us ever to call hunting one of them. Britney is no longer the big deal she once was, having gone from teenage+ superstardom to a kind of disreputale sleazy rep. (presumably in order to keep up with her age). My 14-year-old daughter who has the good taste to like the Weavers (and if I may add, Silvio Rodriguez :) :) :)) was also utterly besotted with Britney and even SHE has taken the posters off the wall. Lisa born 1960 PS how is it the rest of you seem to have children who dutifully and rapturously attended Richard Shindell concerts and everything? Have they no rebellion in their souls?
