["Matthew Bullis" Subject: [RS] Cleveland Oh, Nov. 17, 2004 Richard Shindell show Cleveland Oh, November 17, 2004 First off, The show was excellent. Richard was in good form, very talkative fully explaining most of the songs. It was Richard and his guitar, no one else. He opened with Fennario. After the song he explained how Fennario was a mythical place and has been song about by many performers, Dylan, Baez, the Dead. He then asked if any of us knew what song he was talking about and proceeded to play one verse of Pretty Peggy O. Then he sang Big Muddy. When he finished he told of his recent appearance in Lexington, Kentucky where he appeared on a local television station. He talked about how Big Muddy was originally going to be sung by Pete Seeger on the Smothers Brothers show but the head of CBS would not allow it, so Richard was quite pleased with himself that he snuck Big Muddy onto live TV in Kentucky. He said he only got to play one verse because it was at the tail end of the show but he said it still felt great. At one point he went into a long talk on the election, the red and blue states and then made a comment about the his list to the effect that, people are trying to tell people what to say and that they shouldn't be talking politics on the list. Well if were not going to talk politics on the list then are what we going to talk about? What type of guitar Im playing? When you tell people to shut up, that's the start of fascism.' Then he said, as a joke I would like to make a bumper sticker that says "Happy Now" and then he began playing Are You Happy Now. He said he was reading a Phillip Roth book. Does anyone know which one? Those are my highlights, just a terrific show; He played for almost two hours. Here's the setlist for Cleveland Oh, November 17, 2004 1.Fennario 2.Waist Deep in the Big Muddy 3.Che Guevara T Shirt 4.Cancillon Sencilla 5.There goes Mavis 6.Hazels House 7.Storms on the Ocean (AP Carter) 8.Wisteria 9.Arrowhead 10.Reunion Hill 11.Next Best Western 12.Are You Happy Now 13.Famous Blue Raincoat (Leonard Cohn) 14.Cold Missouri Water 15.Last Fare of the Day 16.Transit Encore - America (Simon & Garfunkel) May this be of benefit, - Joe (Fascism - suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 2004 13:30:04 -0500 From: rfoxwell@wso.williams.edu Subject: Re: [RS] Tunin' in... I just want to say that I think it's awesome that Richard keeps himself abreast of the goings-on on the listserver. That's pretty cool. All opinions about political discussion aside--although I'm happy that Richard's views align with my own--it's neat that he tunes in and is aware of what's going on, so much as to be able to recognize "Carrie from KC" (? I think it was Carrie...) by her e-mail handle when she spoke to him. That rocks. - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 2004 15:30:52 -0600 From: "kunigunda" Subject: Re: [RS] Richard on WYEP November 18th I forgot to mention the Che Guevara teeshirts were on sale at the Chicago show. They were red with "Che Guevara Teeshirt" in black block letters on the front, and on the back in tiny print was www.richardshindell.com. It was almost hard to make out. They were $15. I didn't get one; they were just a tad too basic for me. I guess Richard has probably left PIT already. Did anyone hear him on the radio today? I just tuned in...too late obviously. And to top it off, I'll be in Pittsburgh tomorrow for the weekend. So close yet so far. Carrie in KC. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 2004 17:33:09 -0500 From: Norman Johnson Subject: [RS] Richard, Pete Seeger, & Philip Roth Joe wrote: >> He talked about how Big Muddy was originally going to be sung by Pete Seeger on the Smothers Brothers show but the head of CBS would not allow it, so Richard was quite pleased with himself that he snuck Big Muddy onto live TV in Kentucky. I can only assume he started at the beginning. Yes Cold Missouri Waters was a treat. He prefaced the song but saying, "I might need lyric sheets, I hope I can remember the words". He did remember and it was great. Also, I forgot to mention, he talked a little about his tunings. Calling the first, 'pagan' tuning and the second one 'Judeo-Christian' tuning. I know he was just kidding around, but does anyone know the tuning of the strings he uses on most of his songs on this tour. If I remember right it seemed the first 11 or 12 songs were in what he called 'pagan' tuning. Any help would be appreciative, thanks. - Joe. Hello, the schedule no longer reflects this coming week, but Richard will be on the program. Go to www.WorldCafe.org to see if it's on in your area. Several of the stations listed on the web site stream live, but the one for WXPN is stereo but has warbly compressed sound. It's tough to find a stream which isn't mono with good sound or stereo with dial-up sound. I would suggest KCRW, but they only seem to broadcast the conversations portion once a week, and not the daily program. The reason I want to find a good-sounding stereo stream is to record the program, as the closest station to me is Flagstaff, and I'll be out of town anyway. I might be able to find a station which streams with good sound before the broadcast, but I'm not sure. I've recieved excellent recordings from other World Cafe performances, so hopefully someone will be recording the show in excellent sound. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail?
