Smith" Subject: [RS] Iron Horse show Wednesday 10/27 a report from the iron horse show wednesday nite...with the red sox going for the world series, the show was not close to sell-out,but richard used the game to comic advantage...asking fans to page their friends to get a score..threatening to leave after 3 songs so he could watch the game...this was the BEST i have ever seen him: very relaxed, very focused...here is the set list, with some comments. - -FENARIO...ron will have to post the chords soon, the song is brilliant. his new taylor guitar sounded AWESOME...great start. - -WAIST DEEP....fine rendition, mentioned pete seeger frequently. - -THERE GOES MAVIS...he said this was his favorite song on the new cd..live,it packs so much more punch than the cd. - -CHE GUEVARRA T-SHIRT...very sharp version, lots of little guitar adds to the song, extended "luna" ending. - -"SPANISH SONG"....tho i do not understand any spanish, this melody is possibly the best of the new cd...great stage rap on how he wrote it. - -HAZEL'S HOUSE...so happy he did this,my favorite song from the new cd...reminds me on my grandma's house. - -STORMS ARE ON THE OCEAN...an A.P.CARTER song...what a version...gotta learn this song...great crowd reaction. - -REUNION HILL....BIG applause for this one. - -HOME TEAM (BALTIMOE ORIOLES SONG)...has he EVER done this live? did 1/2 the song from memory,in honor of the boston red sox...not on any cd,so he said. - -FISHING....very intense version,by request. - -FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT..leonard cohen's song...the inspiration for NORA...lots of people singing the lyrics. - -ARE YOU HAPPY NOW...just a few days before halloween,a perfect choice, tho not a song i need to keep hearing...tonite,it worked great. - -LAST FARE OF THE DAY...BRILLIANT,BRILLIANT,BRILLIANT... - -TRANSIT...lots of applause for this one. - -ENCORE: SO SAYS THE WHIPPORWILL...with the extra verse...much faster than the record. all in all,a great night...he also asked for donations for his soup kitchen/childrens center in his home town..VERY emotional plea for donations...judging by the line at the cd stand,LOTS of money for his very worthy charity..LIST MEMBERS,please bring some extra money for donations...this seems to be near to richard's heart...thursday's show is with " the trio"...can't go,but maybe you can...WHAT A NIGHT.... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Oct 2004 17:39:54 -0400 From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Iron Horse show Wednesday 10/27 Frank . . . thanks for the Iron Horse review. I've gotten spoiled over the years getting to see multiple Richard shows during a single tour (fat chance of THAT happening out here in Sandy Eggo), so I'm going to start living vicariously through Shindell-list reviews. Some thoughts: >> FENARIO...ron will have to post the chords soon << Don't bet the rent on that ever happening. Even if I COULD figure out the song, the intricate picking pattern doesn't lend itself well to my rudimentary (but hopefully good enough for what it is) "this chord goes here" transcription format. >> CHE GUEVARRA T-SHIRT... extended "luna" ending. << I love the "luna luna llena" ending. A much lovelier (and sadder) way to wrap up the song compared to the rather abrupt way it ends on the album. >> "SPANISH SONG"....this melody is possibly the best of the new cd << I absolutely agree, and singing this song has helped my Spanish pronunciation greatly. I really like saying "conjugando verbos tujos," and try to work it into conversation whenever I can. ;-) >> HOME TEAM (BALTIMOE ORIOLES SONG)...has he EVER done this live? << Yep, I've heard it a few times over the years. I had a great mp3 of it, which unfortunately was lost in my Computer Crash From Hell last week. You want to hear tragic . . . I could only retrieve whatever data would fit on a floppy, meaning any files over 1.38MB are gone. Want to spend an exciting weekend? Go transfer over 100MB of files and documents, one floppy at a time. No fun. >> FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT...lots of people singing the lyrics. << As famous (no pun intended) as this song is, I only ever heard it for the first time when Richard did it at Joe's Pub back in April. Absolutely blew me away, and no other version I've heard (Leonard Cohen, Jennifer Warnes, Tori Amos) has even come close. I need to hear his version again, and I'm sorry I forgot to request it when I saw him here back in August. >> SO SAYS THE WHIPPORWILL...with the extra verse << I'm glad Father Brown has made a reappearance. RG ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Oct 2004 22:58:39 -0400 From: Norman Johnson Subject: [RS] Iron Horse Thursday 10/28 The show on Friday was with Lincoln and Denny as well... and the crowd was so into Richard. He received many requests, including some for Cold Missouri Waters (which he turned down) Fenario -after which he said, this is the first of a thinly-veiled indictment of officials. The next one is not so veiled. Waist Deep in the Big Muddy- Richard said "did you get what it's about". Then he tuned and then he talked about Pete Seeger writing it in 1967 (he would not be silenced) and how the song is relevant again. Mavis- His favorite. The song was going nowhere until he added the canary. Richard recommends adding a canary to creative works, except for cooking. The APCarter song Storms are on the Ocean. Che Guevara T-shirt with the new ending- I was surprised that Richard didn't mention last night's eclipse in connection with the full moon. Also talk of the Patriot Act. Cancion Sencilla- His "meta" song. Talked about how he didn't need to use the subjunctive because his love was so certain. It is a beautiful song. Hazel's House- Hazel is alive and doing well at age 94 or so. Next Best Western Arrowhead- fast, and the only place that Richard had any serious stumbles. Yes, Ron, Richard almost always messes up Arrowhead. Summer wind, Cotton dress Are You Happy Now? - No mention of Halloween. Courier - a lot of requests for this one. Stunning! Last Fare of the Day- Richard was proporting the "two couple" version. Transit - "ashcroft republicans" America - encore- Richard talked about how everytime he comes back to the US, it seems weirder and weirder. He mentioned that listening to certain songs on a tape that he has, anchors him and that Paul Simon's America was one of those.
