Very nice >> version...reminded me what a great song it is. As a long time fan of Willy Porter I can't agree more. I actually found RS through hearing Willy's (amazing IMO) cover of You Stay Here many times in concert. He always referred to it as a song by an amazing songwriter he had met at a festival show in NJ. How right he was! I am excited to hear all of the reviews of the first shows of the tour, I have my tix for the WXPN show in Philly and can't wait! Hopefully the Che shirt will be available by that show! :) Kevin from DE ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Sep 2004 17:54:55 -0700 (PDT) From: Keith Tomlinson Subject: Re: [RS] SSTW? Well I don't know if it is a guitar player thing - but I agree completely with Ron. The song prior to album sounded different - not just the missing verse (which is not an issue for me) but musically. It was in DADGAD/had a different sound and was a lot faster. I think it originally had a great tempo/sound and drive compared to the album version. I personally feel the album could have used a song with a driving force behind it (like the concert version of SSTW) kind of what Confession did for SNP. But again just my opinion... From: adam plunkett Date: Mon Sep 27 13:43:51 2004 Subj: SSTW? "i know most people really miss that verse but I wouldn't call it "far from the definitive version". It's still one of the best songs and tracks on the album IMO....." I omitted Che Guevara T-shirt which of course he played after discussing his idea for such a t-shirt and the recent "rights" or lack of rights to include an actual face of Che Guevara on any item. He played Hazel's House too -- explaining that it is his Aunt Hazel. I must have lapsed with the pen for a bit. I knew I was on cruise control -- just humming right along. I had a big smile. It was a night to hold dear for as long as possible. Once again, thank you for your music Richard. You have a great gift that you choose to share. I think you know my pain." Talking about how much he and Richard have in common: "We both love sushi and are both very much addicted to our Mac PowerBooks... we both love soccer... I'm thinking of proposing tomorrow." Talking about EFO: "Sometimes we travel through states which lack electricity." Foodmart story -- throwing a party because they were having a contest -- 6th customer of the night gets free coffee (which is what he went in there for) - -- going back onto the bus at three in the morning with the coffee: "Guys, wake up.... I'm a winner." 3) Number Six Driver "I've noticed recently that I'm getting older." It becomes more important that you understand your roots. "This song is not about me, but... I mean, *none* of these are about me." 4) Minnesota 1945 "This is the greatest love song I've ever heard." 5) You May Be Right (Billy Joel) "Doesn't that just choke y'all up?" Backpacking in Europe because "it was better than life." Story about a French cafe and trying to ask the waitress what the lamb dish was (i.e., how it was prepared). Waitress responded by imitating a sheep (baaaa). And then talked angrily about him to the other customers. 6) Stupid American Announcing the KMart blue light special over at the CD table -- "Not that I shop at KMart... And I don't drink Starbucks either." 7) Candido y America ********************************* Richard's set: Sat down and had a dialogue with the audience: "How are you? I'm fine, thank you. How was your day?" Drove up from LA in rental car because couldn't deal with LAX. Drive took 4.5 hours. 1) Beyond the Iron Gate (abbreviated version) Next song is a cowrite with John Donne. Written from point of view of Pretty Peggy-o. Sings a verse of "Pretty Peggy-o." It's a "thinly veiled indictment of semi-elected public officials..." 2) Fenario This is "another thinly veiled indictment of semi-elected public officials.... by Pete Seeger." 3) Waist Deep in the Big Muddy (Pete Seeger) "I'll keep singing that song until it becomes unnecessary to sing it anymore." The next song is "a long song in which not much happens musically. [...] I tried to put a chorus in it to make it more like a song... but the chorus just seemed violent." "There's gonna be a merchandizing spin-off for this song. A red t-shirt with black lettering, and it's just gonna say in generic lettering, 'Che Guevara T-Shirt.'" 4) Che Guevara T-Shirt (ending with a repeating refrain of "luna luna luna llena") The next song is a song about writing a song in Spanish. "It's a metasong." "A preemptive strike against any kind of criticism" of his Spanish abilities. A "love song which deals with certain grammatical pitfalls of writing a song in a language you don't know." It's mushier in English than in Spanish. Discussion of the "beautiful, fascinating, impenetrable" subjunctive, then "at the end of the song I use the subjunctive, and then I conjugate a bunch of verbs." 5) Cancion Sencilla 95 year old aunt in New Jersey. This song is "unironic, unvarnished, sentimental." 6) Hazel's House 7) Next Best Western "I wrote that song when I wasn't sure I was an atheist. I'm sure now. [...] I'm sick to death of sanctimonious politicians." 8) Reunion Hill "Alright, so I'm not consistent." "First song I ever wrote. First full song." 9) Are You Happy Now? Before the final verse, revealed that "the genesis of the song was quite different than you might think." Explained that he was dating a day care center teacher who sent all the kids over to his apartment for Halloween, and told him to prepare something special and spooky. "I completely forgot." So he sat there in the dark, hearing the excited pattering of little feet coming to the door, and then, since he didn't answer the door, listening to "poor little plodding dejected feet" retreating. As he sat there in a "state of deep self-doubt and loathing" he got an idea for a song, "in which I blamed the absence of candy on somebody else." But then wrote an extra half verse for her, to soften the blow. Lots of requests called out. "'Black and White'? What is that? Oh, you mean 'Shades of Grey.' The opposite. I think you missed the point of the song, sir." "Wait till you hear this one. [...] Maybe my favorite song of all time." 10) America (Paul Simon) Discussion of project he's helping his Italian friend Lucca on: trying to build soup kitchen in Buenos Aires (called "Crecer con Amor"). 80 children all kissed him on the cheek. "Weird old East Coast song." Talking about touring with Robbie: "We have a weird profession because you're never in the same place as any of your colleagues. Because if you were, you'd be double booked." 11) Transit ("families in SUVs, Ashcroft Republicans") - ------ More requests. "Wait till you hear this one." 12) The Last Fare of the Day ********************************* "i could still have an easy life but the lie ain't worth the living..." - -n.f. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V6 #206 ***********************************
