(Wonderful as the latter are!) That way our listeners make a lot of new discoveries. When a disc comes in, we listen and play the good songs, no matter what the name on the jewel case says. So if you know anyone who fits the description, tell 'em to visit http://radio.grassyhill.org and follow the instructions. Format is basically folk/acoustic with some world, folk/pop etc thrown in. Of course there's plenty of Richard too :) - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2004 13:58:37 GMT From: "ptpowerlists@juno.com" Subject: [RS] Vuelta Cover Photo Anyone notice how very similar the image of Richard is on the cover of "Vuelta" to the back cover image of "Sparrow[no apostrophe]s Point"? You are indeed on to something about the state of Radio. Playlists. We have a decent commercial adult rock/pop station here on Long Island, WEHM (92.9 FM) that plays older pop/rock like Van Morrison and also plays new releases from up and coming artists as well as those that are established. But, they'll play only one song from the new album for several weeks then rotate it out of the playlist. And just forget the Clear Channel stations, unless you want to be 'hooked up' with some Boston or any of the same three songs from the same 30 bands that get played over and over. My local college station is WUSB (90.1 FM) (www.wusb.org) in Stony Brook NY. Charlie Backfish has an excellent folk program called 'Sunday Street' that airs Sunday mornings from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. He plays some traditional stuff and lots of contemporary music. I truly think most of the people here on this Shindell list will enjoy Charlie Backfish. Charlie is followed by a traditional country show. There is a traditional folk program on Monday evening and a blues show on Tuesday nights. Also worth a mention is Jim Dexter's show on Tuesday 7:00 am to 9:00 am. Jim plays artists like Pat Methany, Joni Mitchell, Robbie Robertson, Will Ackerman, with some local singer/songwriters in the mix. Aside from Charlie and Jim, the station overall is more amateur/college than WFUV or WUMB. Let Charlie spin some tunes for your Sunday morning coffee, you'll like what you'll hear. (available on line) Oh, and since I've gone on about playlists I should say that Charlie does indeed have one that he makes available by e-mail after each show. Rest assured, Charlie's playlist changes weekly. "And the radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools tryin' to anaesthetize the way that you feel Radio is a sound salvation Radio is cleaning up the nation They say you better listen to the voice of reason But they don't give you any choice 'cause they think that it's treason. So you had better do as you are told. You better listen to the radio." We got to talking about music, and I took out my copy of "Sparrows Point" and asked him if he was familiar with Richard Shindell. Indeed he was; it turns out that he was the guy who shot the SP photos! I live just across the Schuylkill River from the station's offices yet can't pick it up on my radio without a talk show station coming in three times as loud on top of it. I'm sure they were playing previews of Vuelta, but I stopped trying to discern any songs through all the talk. Tuesday evening on my walk home from work, I stopped in at the Border's in center city and was disappointed to learn that they had already sold out of Vuelta. I was mad at myself for waiting until the end of the day to pick it up but when I was told they had only ordered one copy of it I felt disbelief. But then I figured, even if I didn't get to be the one to take it home, it was a good thing that the one copy had already sold as I would have been further disappointed to think such a gem could sit there all day without being bought. Have since brought home a copy and am listening to it sparingly -- "wunnerful wunnerful" as a friend of mine teases. I want to keep the feeling of hearing it "new" -- and, in listening to the CD (much as I looked forward to it), I sometimes think I lose the memory of how I felt when first hearing the songs live in concerts. It's as if I can no longer hold onto that initial feeling in my mind -- kind of like having a reproduction of a painting one loves. Ultimately looking at the reproduction usurps the experience of contemplating the original. Still, of course, thrilled to have this new CD: A welcome and treasured gem in any artistic climate but in the artistic desert through which we currently wander it is like a big cold beer. A response to the visual design of the booklet: love the monochromatic photos (gray) and the bits of green that appear throughout as song titles, the reflection on the floor in the upside-down photo, as the background bleed on the inside-back cover and (perhaps most beautifully) as the tiny transparent leaf-like form in the otherwise black-and-white back page photo. Without being strident, a kind and touching response to the title of the closing song. For the first time, have also just finally heard the songs/poems Richard sings on the Jay Ansill "Lost World" CD from several years back. On that note, does anyone know where I might be able to get copies of "I Am" or the Dylan song Richard covered on a tribute CD? In spite of losing the memory of hearing them live, I'd nevertheless love to be able to re-hear them at home . In closing, my sympathies to Carrie in Kansas City as I now understand a little differently how frustrated she must always feel when new schedules are posted without ever listing a venue in her town. In November, I am going to Chicago, Minneapolis and then back to Philadelphia. I am just dumbfounded to realize I will probably be missing the concerts in each town by a day or two. And, at home, I just live five blocks from the venue where he'll be performing. Scream. Hoping somehow rearrange my schedule. In case Richard lurks, a thousand thanks for the new CD and the infinite inspiration it offers. Now that it's out there, I hope it brings back to him even more than every conceivable good response he could possibly want or hope for.
