Let's see now. It comes as no surprise to me that I wound up with "Courier" for virtually every answer below. 1. Courier "Courier" version. 2. Memory of You Eh. Not a fan, so either works fine. 3. Next Best Western "Courier" version. I like the intensity and more-folkish-less-countryish sound that this version has. 4. Kenworth of my Dreams "Courier" version, although my hands-down favorite is a Feb. '97 Treestar recording featuring Radoslav on the piano. (Thanks Ron!) 5. Nora Either works for me. I'll go with the "Courier" version for consistency's sake. 6. Arrowhead "Courier" version. 7. Reunion Hill "Courier" version. 8. Fishing "Courier" version, resoundingly and emphatically. 9. Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress See previous e-mail. ;-) Each is my favorite, depending on what mood I want to create/feel. 10. On a Sea of Fleur de Lis Either works. "Courier" version by default. 11. Ballad of Mary Magdalen No passionate feelings either way. 12. Are You Happy Now? "Courier" version. 13. Transit Ooh, toughy. I really like the droning, tension-creating instrument featured in the SNP version, but Richard seems to have more passion and intensity in the "Courier" version. I'm gonna give the nod to the "Courier" version, simply because the "well-insured horde" lyric on the live version is soooo much cooler than the "murderous horde" lyric in the studio version. Fun idea, Ron! - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jul 2004 07:44:14 -0500 From: "MARSIK Theresa" Subject: [RS] live vs. studio I wanted to add my two cents. I agree with what someone (Ron?)previously= said, in that I'm influenced by the way I first heard the songs. =20 1. Courier - Courier version. 2. Memory of You - studio version, just because this was the first song of= Richard's that Lucy sang harmony on, and I remember one of them telling a= neat story about it. 3. Next Best Western - studio version...it seems a little more plaintive= and desperate (but that's too strong a word) to me. 4. Kenworth of my Dreams - Courier version. 5. Nora - it's pretty close, but I think the studio version. It just seems= a bit more quiet and intimate. This is a song that I've tried to request= the last couple times I've seen Richard, but he hasn't played it (he's= played Sonora's Death Row, though, so maybe I need to speak up so he can= understand which song I'm requesting). ;) 6. Arrowhead - Courier version. 7. Reunion Hill - This is close. I think the studio version, but I'll have= to listen again. Like someone else said, it was amazing when Richard and= Tracy Grammer played this when they toured in 2003. 8. Fishing - Courier version.=20 9. Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress - Courier version. 10. On a Sea of Fleur de Lis - Courier version. It sounds more pleading= than the studio version. 11. Ballad of Mary Magdalen - I'm not sure. I think Courier, but I'd have= to listen to them again. 12. Are You Happy Now? - studio version. 13. Transit - Courier version.=20 Can't wait for Vuelta! Wish I was going to FRFF so I could hear the new= songs that much sooner. We hope you're enjoying your summer! We are currently busy working on finalizing our fall season. While some of the shows cannot be announced yet, we do have 2 shows to tell you about today. We will send another email when the schedule is complete or you can always check the website at http://www.songstreetproductions.net for current information. RICHARD SHINDELL - w/Special Guest TBA !!! Saturday October 23, 2004 7:30 pm at the Somerville Theater Tickets are $24.00 and $22.00. At this time tickets are only available by calling Songstreet at 617-628-3390. Check our website for further ticket information as it becomes available. We are proud to welcome one of our favorite singer songwriters back to the Somerville Theatre after a long absence touring behind his new CD called "Vuelta", so don't miss this chance to see a great performer. There will also be a second great act on this bill, though you'll have to check back on the website for the secret identity of this performer at a later date. An expatriate New Yorker now living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Richard Shindell is a meticulous craftsman of song whose four studio albums and recent live recording have been revered by critics and fans alike. Innovative, original and occasionally spiritual, Shindells songs weave tales that interchangeably champion the downtrodden, exalt the disaffected or wax empathetic to those lost to societys fringes. From his first record, Sparrows Point (1992) to the live album Courier (2002), Shindell has demonstrated a penchant for songwriting at once passionate and profound. His songs are often slowly and painstakingly crafted until honed to perfection. Conversely, he is also capable of writing tunes that are simply clever and amusing. Shindells songwriting is truly eclectic, ranging from lighthearted ballads and adulterous love songs, to dirges and diatribes that skillfully skewer politics, prejudice, war and religion. He has a unique ability to morph into the soul of the many and varied personalities he casts as narrators in certain songs--songs that are veritable novellas framed in haunting acoustic melodies, sometimes including cryptic, revelations through the eyes of a woman. "Shindell is a master builder of songs, yet always leading listeners toward the emotional essence of the moment or character he is evoking. As with all master craftsmen, knowing what to leave out is as important to him as what he puts in. Shindell has an uncanny sense of the theater of a song, building his ballads sparely and subtly, set to sweeping graceful melodies." - -Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe "Like two other 'best' singer-songwriters, Bruce Springsteen and Lucinda Williams, he dwells on big, often difficult moments in the lives of ordinary people. By staying with them even as he flies into metaphor, he maintains equanimity." - -Ann Powers, The New York Times ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------EDDIE FROM OHIO - CD Release Party !!! Saturday December 11, 2004 8:00 pm at the Somerville Theater Tickets are $22.50 and $21.50. At this time tickets are only available by calling Songstreet at 617-628-3390. We are proud to bring one of our favorite bands back to the Somerville Theatre for a concert to celebrate the release of their latest CD. If you've seen these guys before we don't have to tell you to get your tickets early as the best seats won't last long! "The greatest band you've never heard of." - -US Air's Attache "They've built a great grassroots following. You can see why - they can sing great, they play great and they write good songs: the old-fashioned reason to be popular." - -Larry Groce, Mountain Stage "Eddie From Ohio is actually a quartet from Virginia, among the hottest new folk bands. Its quirky, hilariously smart-alecky songs are bringing young fans to folk and a welcome spirit of fun to the often-dour world of the songwriter." - -The Boston Globe Hope to see you there! - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you would like to be removed from this list, please send us an email with a subject of "Unsubscribe". ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V6 #139 ***********************************
