First of all, let me preface this by saying that I'm extremely uncomfortable using the list for a totally self-serving purpose -- as well as for cross-posting this message on another list or two -- but I'm hoping that the circumstances will allow me this one exception. As several of you who know me are aware, I will soon be packing up and leaving New Jersey -- the land of shopping malls, the merge from the Turnpike, Hazel's house, Paterson, Englewood ("Just take it slow," was all she said) and birthplace of one Richard Shindell -- for San Diego (the land of mountains, desert, surfing, terrible bagels, Petco Park, over-the-counter drugs just a short drive away in Tijuana, and not even one good folk song from which to make a clever reference). I'm making the move for both personal and professional reasons, but don't cry for me, Argentina; there are worse places I could be going, I reckon (although it's been tough listening to "Wisteria" recently). Anyway, I was thinking that a nice way to say goodbye to my list pals in the NJ/NY area would be to offer up one last RG musical performance, honoring the songwriters we all love (mostly Richard and Dave & Tracy, but I guarantee at least one song each by Mark Erelli, Lucy Kaplansky, Patty Griffin, Gillian Welch, Dar Williams, Darryl Purpose, Lynn Miles, Lori McKenna, and Julie Miller. And just to show that Great Mimes Think Alike, our good buddies Gene and Isabel Frey were thinking the same thing, and have kindly offered up their home for a house concert, where I had the great pleasure of opening for We're About 9 back in February. We're calling it the "RG 'Farewell to East Coast' East Coast Farewell Tour" show. Date: Saturday, June 26 Time: 2pm Address: 16 Court Street, Merrick, NY 11566 Directions: http://members.aol.com/rongrittz/directions.htm Please RSVP to Gene and Isabel at courthouseconcerts@yahoo.com, and I would be honored to see some of you there. Your pal, RG I'm from New Jersey I don't expect too much If the world ended today I would adjust -- John Gorka ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Jun 2004 09:08:59 -0400 From: Howie Subject: Re: [RS] Let's not drive away just yet. You are wrong wrong wrong, Wron. Here are the lyrics to San Diego Serenade by Tom Waits, one of my favorites of his, and even somewhat appropriate: I never saw the morning 'til I stayed up all night I never saw the sunshine 'til you turned out the light I never saw my hometown until I stayed away too long I never heard the melody, until I needed a song. I never saw the white line, 'til I was leaving you behind I never knew I needed you 'til I was caught up in a bind I never spoke "I love you" 'til I cursed you in vain, I never felt my heartstrings until I nearly went insane. I never saw the east coast 'til I moved to the west I never saw the moonlight until it shone off your breast I never saw your heart 'til someone tried to steal, tried to steal it away I never saw your tears until they rolled down your face. - -Howie ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V6 #117 ***********************************
