Very impressively, google took me a a site called www.cowboylyrics.com , where they had the following lyrics for "Sin City": Sin City Gram Parsons THIS OLD TOWNbS FILLED WITH SIN ITbLL SWALLOW YOU IN IF YOUbVE GOT SOME MONEY TO BURN TAKE IT HOME, RIGHT AWAY YOUbVE GOT THREE YEARS TO PAY BUT SATAN IS WAITING HIS TURN CHS THIS OLD EARTHQUAKEbS GONNA LEAVE ME IN THE POORHOUSE IT SEEMS LIKE THIS WHOLE TOWNbS INSANE ON THE THIRTY FIRST FLOOR A GOLD PLATED DOOR WONbT KEEP OUT THE LORDS BURNING RAIN THE SCIENTISTS SAY, ITbLL ALL WASH AWAY BUT WE DONbT BELEIVE ANY MORE bCOS WEbVE GOT OUR RECRUITS AND OUR GREEN MOHAIR SUITS SO PLEASE SHOW YOUR I.D. AT THE DOOR CHS INST CHS A FRIEND CAME AROUND TRIED TO CLEAN UP THIS TOWN HIS IDEAS MADE SOME PEOPLE MAD HE TRUSTED HIS CROWD SO HE SPOKE RIGHT OUT LOUD AND THEY LOST THE BEST FRIEND THEY HAD CHS X 2 FINISH ( I hope that posts OK to the list) Anyway, great song. I saw Richard do it just recently at the Nassau County Community College show. Does anyone happen to know the history of the song? And what the song is about? Seems to have something to do with Los Angeles ( the scientists say) and the music business, and maybe some bad bad music company president who has an office of the 31st floor and a gold-plated sign (with his name and title), but who is apparently going to Hell ( well, that pretty much goes without saying). Strikes me that it might have some connection to the Joni Mitchell song "The Arrangement" : You could have been more Than a name on the door On the thirty-third floor in the air More than a credit card Swimming pool in the backyard which is from Joni's "Ladies Of The Canyon" album, from 1970. So probably she wrote that song in 1968 or 1969. Anyone know when "Sin City" was written? There is no scandal here; it's folk music people are allowed to borrow from each other. And it may be just a coincidence. Also, is there a story about how Richard became such a big Gram Parsons fan? I mean, during the time he was alive I do not remember him as a big star. Even "The Flying Burrito Brothers" were not nearly as big as The Byrds ( which came right after, yes? ). Just wondered if maybe Richard had a friend or teacher who turned him onto Gram. Personally, I have a friend who turned me onto Emmy Lou, and she turned me onto Gram ( well, not personally ). And, of course, Gram Parsons is now a legend, and a good name to bring up if you are out on a date, and you want to find out if the woman you are with knows about music and stuff. Tom Waits is also a good name to bring up. Or Art Tatum. Or Richard Thompson. Or, if she is really beautiful, and you don't care if she knows anything about music, you can always bring up the name Paul McCartney. ( Paul is great, and well.. she will have heard of Paul McCartney). bye... The definitive version is the > original, on the Flying Burrito Brothers classic "Gilded Palace of Sin." > Tim Flannery, former San Diego Padre and long-time singer songwriter (taylor player, too, Ron!) also has a quite nice version of it in his live disc. Not quite up to Gram's version, but not bad at all. - -Jim ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Apr 2004 08:49:47 -0400 From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Sin City >> I mean, during the time he was alive I do not remember him as a big star.
