He is amazing. He is on the live album and I have seen him perform both with Greg Brown(he appears on most of Brown's early albums) and Jimmy LaFave, when he tours with a band. He provided keyboard accompaniment on many of the songs at the Passim shows (I went to both, the 7:00 and the 10:00), and also provided accordion accompaniment on several songs, including Arrowhead. The 7:00 show was truly a classic, just a superb performance. I was particularly pleased to hear Sonora's Death Row, which I've never heard live before. Richard nailed it, despite it being one of the songs he plays less frequently. There are only two songs I can think to add to Marshall's set list: the first was a rollicking song I wasn't familar with that featured Radoslav wailing on the keyboard--and seemed intended to showcase his talents--and the second was the first of Richard's encore songs, the "this old earthquake's gonna leave me in the poorhouse" song made famous by Emmylou. (Can't remember the title.) The second encore song was "America", by request. The 10:00 show was also pleasing, but it was late, much more laid-back and less intense, and Richard seemed kind of worn out. It lasted for an hour and a half, with most of the same songs as the 7:00 show with the addition of three of the new songs--"Gray-Green", "Hazel's House", and "So Says The Whippoorwill"--and minus "AYHN", "Sonora", "America", "Next Best Western", and the earthquake/poorhouse song. (The encore was "Last Fare".) Despite being less powerful, the 10:00 show did feature the most perfect and beautiful version of "Arrowhead" that I have yet heard. It was tremendous, featuring Radoslav on the accordion. One thing of note that Richard commented on: he said that the new record was pretty much finished, but that he brought the equipment up to New York to put some final finishing touches and changes on the previous night. In so doing, he utilized some of the musicians that he has used on his previous records. Given his earlier comments about "So Says the Whipporwill" being somewhat incomprehensible to his Argentinian musicians, I wonder if he mixed that one here? Interesting. Also, Richard commented that he produced this album, which was "a real pain in the neck" that he would never do again. I was disappointed that they didn't play "Kenmore" together; I like the song middling well when Richard does it on its own, but Rad's keyboard background really transforms it into a beautiful song. I asked Rad if they would play it in the 10:00 show, and he said that it was very likely, but no such luck. :-( - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Apr 2004 13:08:54 -0400 From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Passim early show >> I was disappointed that they didn't play "Kenmore" << Heh heh . . . Sigh. That's what I get for staying up all night to hear the two shows back-to-back, I guess. I was probably thinking of Kenmore Station, one of the subway stops here in Boston, which I've been frequenting lately. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Apr 2004 12:54:47 -0500 From: "kunigunda" Subject: [RS] Re: shindell-list-digest V6 #74 Date: Tue, 6 Apr 2004 18:01:14 +0100 From: "Dave McKay" Subject: [RS] RE: Albuelita > Does anyone know what the word means?
