I personally think the definitive version of this song is Jeff Buckley's on Grace. I didn't know it was a Leonard Cohen song when I first heard it, so it's hard not to be completely underwhelmed by Leonard after learning it through the amazing voice and power of Jeff Buckley. Hearing Jeff Buckley sing it, I wonder why anyone else even tries. Even if I was Leonard, I think I might just let Jeff own it. ha! kidding. Anyone else out there know Jeff's take? jenn ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Apr 2004 20:13:36 GMT From: ptpowerlists@juno.com Subject: [RS] Re: Halleujah Jenn wrote: >>So many people do this as a cover. Wowza. If there's ever been an album that started off with two more powerful songs (besides, maybe, Jackson Browne's "Late for the Sky"), I've yet to hear it. I could scream. Actually, I already have. I missed the shows because I had school last night, and I obviously made the wrong choice. But don't tell my kids that. For once (insert smiley face here) I agree with Susan - Tori Amos, on Tower of Song, has the best version of FBR that I have ever heard. Jennifer Warnes FBR album is good, but her version of the title track lacks the power of Tori's. Re: Hallelujah, Jeff Buckley ruined it for everyone else. His version is so good that all others pale in comparison. Rufus Wainwright's is pretty good. Never heard Mulvey's version, but I'm sure he does a nice job, as usual. Another good Cohen cover is Josh Ritter's take on Chelsea Hotel #2. I wasn't a big Cohen fan until I got into some cover versions of his stuff, then worked my way back into the originals. The Essential Leonard Cohen, from the Columbia/Sony series, is the best collection I have seen. There are many LC songs that are stunning in their simplicity..The skill that LC is most known for..strip em down and the sparcer the better.. Suzanne, Hallelujah.. which i recommend by Jeff Buckley and rent Shrek..that is Rufus Wainwright singing A killer version of that same LC song.. i actually recommend the Essential LCohen to fully get a deeper look at his catalogue.. Im your man, sisters of mercy, chelsea hotel, bird on a wire ( which johnny cash does a killer version) everybody knows, and tower of song.. Last summer the Mcgarrigles et al, nick cave, rufus and the original back up singers for LC were in prospect park celebrating the catalogue and music of LC...what a night.. i learned a deeper appreciation for his music.. this year by the way.. the tribute is to Neil Young.. sharon who got stuck at work and in traffic and missed the early show and colllapsed and didnt dare try the late one.. A man who must have been in his 80s did a great version of Everybody Knows. Not surprising that Jennifer Warnes would cover Cohen as she has been his backup singer for years. Willy is passing through Eugene this weekend, think I'll have to go hear him now. p.s. I LUVVV Jeff Buckley singing Hallelujah!!!
