There are actually a goodly number of sources that dispute that Mate is based on anything other than caffeine. Basic chemistry shows that caffeine has no stereoisomer at all, which is what "mateine"--the "active ingredient" of Mate--is said to be. Mateine is just a fable, a wishful version of caffeine, according to many studies. However, other studies say that even if Mate is not based on a separate ingredient, it boasts the most potent and healthful possible combination of xanthines, caffeine or no caffeine. Interesting.
