In Richard's post a few weeks ago he mentioned that he initially considered recording the album with Larry, John, etc. at The Loft but then decided to make the leap and record in Argentina. He may try to round up the "usual suspects" to record this song while he's in the NY area. Just a hunch... Not much to add to what has been said about this performance, except that I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout. Williamstown is pretty much out in the boonies, as was previously commented on, and it was good to see a decent turnout. The show was really great, Richard was in fine form and much more cheerful than I've seen him at other shows. He was very personable and engaged in a lot of banter with the audience, talking about his newfound love of a South American drink concoction ("Mata"? Something like that) and having kicked his smoking habit for five months now...GO RICHARD!!!! He did say that this was his first full concert in five months, so perhaps that had something to do with how relaxed he seemed. He really got into "Arrowhead" and "Transit", and the audience responded really well to both of these plus "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy", "Last Fare of the Day", and "Reunion Hill". All in all, a very good performance. Above all, it was tremendous to see my favorite folk artist perform at my alma mater. Terrific! A Williamstown visit combined with a Shindell concert is pretty much the best way to spend a weekend that I can imagine. Now I get to look forward to seeing him in Boston in a scant ten days... - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Mar 2004 21:19:18 -0500 From: Monika Albrecht Subject: Re: [RS] Clark Art Institute show. > ... ("Mata"? Something like that) .... I think it was Yerba Mate. I wish I could remember the story about the Spanish song. It was funny, something along the line that it was a wonderful song for second language acqusition and that he found a new niche in the market. Do you remember? Yes, I remember, probably because it's the same prefacing remarks he always makes before singing Cancion. (I never get tired of hearing it, though, it's a riot.) He talks about how it's the first song he's written in Spanish, and how it is much sappier and "mushier" than anything he would write in English. The Spanish in it is quite rudimentary, apparently, and so it's pretty basic stuff that would appeal to the "Spanish as a second language" crowd. He quipped about how he was exploring that previously-undiscovered niche (much like how he claims that "Fishing" explores the "INS Interrogation" niche). Good stuff. He ran through an English translation of the song, describing it as a lovesong that talks about how difficult it is to master the Spanish language, commenting on the harships involved in the use of the subjunctive clause, various declensions and conjugations, etc. The crowd reacted with hearty laughter, especially when he talked about finishing the song by conjugating a bunch of random verbs. I attended the show with a Latino friend, and he was cracking up during the song. ------------------------------ End of shindell-list-digest V6 #60 **********************************
