In a message dated 3/9/2004 4:57:16 AM Eastern Standard Time, Jim Colbert woefully observes: >>Ron, Gene, Isabel- we may have seen him (RS) at the last house concert he ever does, when he played at Tim's.<< Sadly, this is probably true, just as it was for Dar a few years ago. Virtually every time Richard plays Long Island I suggest to him that he consider playing my House Concert series. He always politely pretends to consider it, then conveniently forgets. The weird thing is, I could charge $20 a ticket and easily draw 75 + people (just like The Nields sisters did two summers ago). That's at least $1,500 in cash, not to mention the 20 or more CD's he'd probably sell. A nice chunk of change. He could spend the night in our guest room with breakfast the next morning, all gratis. And since I've known him pretty well for quite a few years now, I'm sure he would be comfortable staying with my wife and I. He'd even like Bailey, our Golden Retriever. The next morning, he could do a live interview with Charlie Backfish on WUSB, the Stony Brook University station. These days, when he is with a band, Richard consistently sells out IMAC (Inter-Media Arts Center) in Huntington, a 550-seat theater where they sometimes add 50 or so more folding chairs to accommodate demand. Solo, he now regularly plays The Brokerage, a kinda cool 100 + club in Bellmore, curiously--and now ruefully--like a mini Bottom Line. But I remember not to long ago when he played a tiny space on the campus of St. Johns University in Queens, opening for Hugh Blumenfeld. What a great show that was, with Hugh doing many protest songs ala Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs and later Richard joining him onstage for a few. Or the time he played the small space at the Good Times Folk Music series in Garden City. Man, that was a time. Long gone now. But I'm happy if Richard is making a handsome income today for himself and his family. A talent as huge as his deserves nothing less. If only the powers that be nominating Grammies would recognize his talent. If Richard's going to be out on Long Island playing the 550-seat IMAC, his contract with the venue may actually *prevent* him from playing elsewhere locally, for fear of potentially cannibalizing the IMAC audience and affecting the promoter's guarantee. This very thing happened to Tracy Grammer this past fall: she was forced to give up potentially lucrative dates at both The Turning Point and Fez because her contract with another local venue actually *forbade* her from playing within a certain radius (I think it was 100 miles) within 60 days of the show.
