This is really surprising to me, since this venue is decidedly tiny. It's also an odd configuration of space, and there are waiters negotiating this space to bring huge plates of food (pretty decent, actually) to everyone (I believe you have to have dinner in order to secure a table). I'd be surprised if they squeezed as many as 75 people in there (maybe a few more at the small bar). Unless they've expanded the space of late, I'm really curious as to why Richard would play there. I realize he still plays the Turning Point just over the Tappan Zee bridge in New York, which is equally miniscule, but the TP is somewhat of a folk icon. As much as I like the place, especially the food, I would think he has moved beyond venues like Club Helsinki, even playing solo, sans band. Curious. At least to me. Thanks for nudging me toward what I hope will be a timely remedy. I wish I could make that show. He is also playing Passim's which, though very famous, hardly fit anybody either. I once saw Richard with the band. It was a very good show...esp. to see Larry Campbell up close. But I don't know how willing I would be to keep seeing him with the band. Meanwhile, I would kill myself to see him solo...especially if he is playing a small room. Shows in the theatres...though are good for the artist economically, I think aren't as good shows overall. Just how I feel having gone to over 100 concerts. I am not saying an artist should stay small. If they can get big...go for it. But I really like when they keep coming to the small venues. Dar Williams plays small venues here in Mass. still and I think that is cool. I saw Richard Thompson in a room of only 75. I will never forget that show. I guess I am sayiong I am a Richard Shindell fan for him, not his band. If I want to go to a rock show, I'd rather pay for a rock band I like. But thats just me :) Adam - --- RockinRonD@aol.com wrote: > As much as I like the place, especially the food, I > would think he has moved > beyond venues like Club Helsinki, even playing solo, > sans band. I have a nice guitar that he wants to play but it's too expensive to risk him trashing it.<< While there have been some good suggestions for finding good, low-priced guitars, it's important to keep in mind that if the guitar isn't of fairly good quality -- with good string action -- that in itself might discourage your son from playing. I was wary about letting my son play my Martin D1R when he was first learning, but I found from personal experience that quality of guitar can have a profound effect on the desire to play the thing. In my foolish, naive youthful days, I purchased (and learned to play) an Ovation guitar... Ugh! After sitting 'round living rooms listening to people with *real* guitars, I knew I had to make a change. It was too many years after that, of course, but thank heavens the change came!
