Hey everyone,

I thought an update on the forthcoming album might be helpful at this point.  
So here goes.
 
After taking a couple of years to get my sea legs here in Buenos Aires, after 
a bit of casting about for musical bearings, after a bit of pre-production, 
work on the new record began in October of 2003 at Estudios Ion with a local 
band called Puente Celeste.  Until I heard this band, I had assumed that for my 
next record I would return to my favorite studio (The Loft, in Bronxville, 
NY), and that I'd work with the same great musicians that had played on my last 
couple of discs (mainly Denny McDermott, Lincoln Schleiffer, John Putnam, and 
the marvelous Larry Campbell).  If it ain't broke....  But, I had begun to feel 
uncomfortable about this plan.  Here I had been presented with this wonderful 
gift of an indefinite sojourn in a distant land, one full of strange and 
wonderful musical flora and fauna, and yet I was all ready to dash back to trusty 
NY to make a record.  Chalk it up to fear of the unknown.  Finally, I opted in 
favor of being where I am.  So, one night, after listening to Puente Celeste 
perform for two mesmerizing hours, I decided there and then that I'd throw in 
my lot with these guys (if they'd have me).  Wielding my hilariously atrocious 
spanish, I approached them.  They were horrified, but very kind.
 
Five months later, the record is basically done. It was mixed at Circobeat, 
Fito Paez's studio in B.A.  A couple of numbers need a bit of tweaking, 
mix-wise: one song (So Says the Whipoorwill) needs to be rerecorded; the main vocal 
track on There Goes Mavis needs to be done over, etc.  (Yes, the bird songs are 
proving troublesome).  But overall, I'm extremely pleased with the result.  
With the exception of an electric guitar that I played on two songs, the odd 
electric bass, and a Fender Rhodes on one other, this is an all-acoustic record. 
 As it stands right now, the instrumentation is: 
 
Edgardo Cardoso - nylon string guitar, requinto (a kind of high-strung nylon 
string guitar), and guitarron (a kind of low-strung nylon string guitar) 
Luciano Dysenchauz - upright and electric bass
Alejandro Franov - piano, Fender rhodes, harmonium, accordion, and sitar

Marcelo Moguilevsky - clarinet, bass clarinet, doudouk, tuned 2 liter 
bottles, and recorder
Santiago Vazquez - percussion, more or less anything that makes an 
interesting noise when struck (including a small bird cage), and tuned wine glasses.

The record, which will contain ten original songs and one cover (Pete 
Seeger's Waist Deep in the Big Muddy), will be released by Koch Records in August 
2004. We were shooting for a spring release, but, alas....  Even though it's 
basically ready, we've decided that an autumn promo tour will better serve the 
record.  Although I'm sure some will welcome the reprieve, I know that many of my 
more ardent fans are, and have been for some time, chomping at the bit, and 
that they will be disappointed by the delay.  Let me say in all sincerity that 
I'm honored and touched by your frothing!  As for all that elapsed time 
between studio records, I know it sounds glib (not to mention trite, annoying, and 
totally unhelpful), but it takes exactly as long as it takes.  I do hope the 
result will be worthy of the wait.

To Ron, and especially Richard........thanks for the update!!

 From the comments I've read here so far, it sounds like it will be worth 
the wait.  Really looking forward to any and all touring dates that I can 
get to this year.  (pssst....shameless plug....ST94 in Sellersville, 
PA....it's perfect for you!)

but now what will this list do for rumor and speculation??  ;)

Ron, 

Thanks for passing along Richard's words about the album. So, in a sense did Richard say "Sorry I'm late, I know how long you had to wait."

This is going to be a great album-- It's been 57 months, if I've done the math right, so that's Heinz ketchup.
