I bought him a guitar at WalMart (your home for cheap plastic crap!) and got what I paid for. I have a nice guitar that he wants to play but it's too expensive to risk him trashing it. So I'm looking for a source for something really cheap but good enough that when I tune it it will stay tuned for more than 5 minutes. I looked on ebay, but I don't know enough to be able to tell if a guitar is any good at all or just another WalMart thing. Thanks for any help. Peter p.s. Going to see RS in one month in Vermont. Very excited. <------ There's the requisite RS content. :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2004 20:12:19 -0500 From: "Kristen Myshrall" Subject: RE: [RS] Off-topic question about guitars Acoustic guitar? My first guitar...which was nice to learn on, was fairly easy to tune and stayed in tune pretty well (even better once I started using Elixer strings) was the Ibanez Jam Pack. It came with the full sized guitar (which is available in black or natural), a padded bag, an electronic tuner, some picks, a chord chart, strings, a book, a video, a strap, and a little bag to keep all that stuff in. I was amazed by the low action, nice body, and the sound was surprisingly good! You can find it online at most stores for less than $200 and I bought mine at a local music store, got a stand, some more picks, and a book and paid ~$250 for everything. They apparently have just put out a Jam Pack 2 which is similar but comes with a dvd and a better guitar. Music123 has it for $199 with free shipping... http://www.music123.com/Item/?itemno=113294 I love this guitar and have obviously kept it around...just upgraded the strings. I would recommend it for beginners who don't have a lot of money to spend. - -Kristen >From: Peter Booth >Reply-To: shindell-list@smoe.org >To: shindell-list@smoe.org >Subject: [RS] Off-topic question about guitars >Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2004 18:48:42 -0800 > >I'm trying to locate a guitar for my son that is inexpensive, but can >actually be tuned and STAY in tune. > >I bought him a guitar at WalMart (your home for cheap plastic crap!) and >got what I paid for. > >I have a nice guitar that he wants to play but it's too expensive to risk >him trashing it. > >So I'm looking for a source for something really cheap but good enough that >when I tune it it will stay tuned for more than 5 minutes. Costs about $199, but it's got a solid spruce top and a low profile neck for easier playing. And if he decides not to continue with guitar, it'll make a not-too-shabby second guitar for you. You know, to keep in DADGAD (obligatory Shindell content . . . heh). Might be reason enough to buy him a nice guitar in hopes that he'll lose interest and I'll have a second for DADGAD. About five minutes ago I was playing Transit and then wanting to play Reunion Hill but didn't feel like re-tuning to DADGAD. Anyone have any ideas for under $100. I know this is ridiculously low, but I have basically no money for this kind of purchase. Just looking for anything that will stay in tune. Tone, action, looks all basically mean nothing. Thanks for any advice. (and free shipping) Go on-line first, lots to see and then when you get your search nailed down, give them a call and they'll work with you on prices, or give you some other suggestions, etc., and they follow up and check in on you.
