I tried to restrain myself but I was unsuccessful. The subjunctive, while difficult, is not a verb tense. It is a verb mood. The subjunctive is used for, among other things, expressing something that is not a fact (or at least something the speaker believes may not be fact). The "normal" mood we use in everyday conversation is the indicative. A verb's tense indicates the time or completion of the action (e.g., simple past, present or future, future perfect, future imperfect).
