What influence these songs had on his own "Fenario" is hard to say. God knows he's heard them enough while hanging out with me. I play the Dead pretty much constantly (to my family's great dismay), and maybe it's rubbing off on him ... What could be next? 20 minute instrumental breaks followed by 30 minute drum solos? It's great! Just finished listening to Kreg Viesselman. He's pretty good. Some of his songs remind me alot of Cat Stevens early stuff. Is anyone old enough to remember Cat Stevens? Carrie in KC. I first saw him as an opener for Ellis Paul last spring and again this past weekend doing his own set. Amazing beyond words. Incredible guitar style employing varied rhythms and tunings. Poetic and spiritually uplifting yet down to earth lyrics. Imaginative characters. Real nice, interesting person. Can't tell enough people about him. I'd recommend "Earth Town Square" to start with. http://www.petermayer.net/blueboat/ Track list: 1. "Ocean Mary" - very much like a Dave Carter song in my opinion - about a girl and a magic stream - "By the water Mary lay. Put her hand in the shallow stream. And Mary had a magic dream. She imagined that inside her stirred. All the waters of the earth. Every puddle every creek. And every one of the seven seas. She could feel the fishes roam. In her fingers and her toes. And in her chest the gulf stream flow....etc 2. "Awake" Simply Beautiful. Lyrics below. 3. "Elijah Jones" About an epitaph on a gravestone which reads..."I walked this good earth, I had my time, and now it's your turn, you're chance at life". 4. "Blue Boat Home" - Lyrical quip - "I've been sailing all my life now. Never harbor nor port have I known. The wide universe is the ocean I travel. And the earth is my blue boat home. Sun my sail and moon my rudder.....etc." Inspired, he said, while reading and pondering "The Tao of Physics." 5. "The Play" - Lyrical quip - When I go outside at night. And look up and the stars are bright. Sometimes I lay on the ground. And imagine that the sky is down. And if the earth should then let go. I'd fall into the stars below...etc. 6."Earth Town Square" Amazing song about all the people of the earth being just a small town. - "And there's music in the park. Kalimbas and guitars. Bagpipes and sitars...Now it's feeling like a small town. With six billion people downtown. Even Babel can't compare. To Earth Town Square". 7."Skyblaster Man" - About the thoughts that run through a carnie's mind as he sends people up, and unloads them from his Skyblaster. 8. "Crawl In" - About his child crawling in to sleep with him and his wife. 9. "Brown County Fair" - Reminiscent of "Roseville Fair" a bit. 10. "Winter Woods" - inspired by cross-country skiing through the Minnesota woods at night. 11. "Astronaut Dreams" Reminds me a little of Massengill's "Noah" except it all happens in the (Imagination?) of one very "ordinary" woman. 12. "Coming Home" - Beautiful. About coming home. Check this guy out. There are two Peter Mayers. Be sure to get the folk guy from Minnesota. "Awake" Clouds are swift Rocks are ancient Mountains are high Oceans great Winds are restless Trees are patient And you my child are awake Waves are crashing Rivers churning Planets twirling stars ablaze Storms are raging Atoms whirling And you my child are awake CHORUS: To perceive these wondrous things To count the beats of a blackbirds wings To tell a story and dance and sing All the splendors Of creation Are very happy that you came Because they needed Someone to see them And you my child are awake CHORUS Seeds are hopeful Dewdrops fleeting Oak trees crooked Redwoods straight And they are not known to the sleeping But you my child are awake You my child are awake You my child - ----- Original Message ----- From: "kunigunda" To: Sent: Tuesday, October 14, 2003 9:25 AM Subject: [RS] Re: new artists > Hi - I jot down all the artists names bantered about in these notes and then > take a listen on their website or on amazon, etc. I've found lots of great > singer/songwriters I never would have run into otherwise. I've just discovered him myself and I completely agree with your comments about his songs. Excellent voice too. I can't get "Yukon Sally" out of my head. Thanks are also due to whoever put up (some time back now) the names of Kris Delmhorst and Erik Balkey. Both outstanding. Keep 'em coming.
