(sob). Does he do a slow version (a la Lyle Lovett) or quick like the studio? I maintain a Brokedown w/Dar and Lucy would be something.....I suppose St. Stephen is too much too ask. Maybe Cry Cry Cry could do a compilation of Dead tunes? Hmm.... - -David (Gratefully) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Oct 2003 21:47:42 EDT From: Rongrittz@aol.com Subject: Re: [RS] Covers >> Funny the 'covers' thread should resurface, after a weekend where we saw two artists that Richard HAS covered (Springsteen Friday, and REM last night). << Aw, c'mon Gene. Saying that Richard has covered an REM song is cheating, if, as I'm assuming, you're talking about Cry Cry Cry's "Fall on Me." That was really Dar's song. "Cold Missouri Waters," "Shades of Gray" and "Memphis" I could understand, but methinks you're stretching the definition somewhat! I'm with you on wishing he'd cover "Duncan," though. But I've never heard him do it with Rad. RE: other covers. Gene suggested Paul Simon's Duncan. I second that emotion. But I really hope his version of PS's America is on the next CD.... or maybe Richard should do a tribute album to Paul Simon. During the Sparrow's Point tour, I asked Richard if he liked Leonard Cohen, as a couple of songs on SP (including Nora, which puts me in mind of Famous Blue Raincoat) reminded me of him. He said that Nora was written as a conscious nod to Cohen. As for Friend of the Devil, I've seen Richard perform it several times when he was playing solo, though that may be because I always request it. I agree it's a great version; for my money it outstrips the Dead's as well as the great cover by Lyle Lovett. They are both literally haunting songs that would do quite well with Richard's touch. And yeah, let's add Dead Egyptian Blues for a break from the heavy stuff! - -Howie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Oct 2003 22:46:17 -0400 From: "Gene Frey" Subject: [RS] Covers Uncovered Hey you guys, Ron G. noted: >>Saying that Richard has covered an REM song is cheating, if, as I'm >>assuming, you're talking about Cry Cry Cry's "Fall on Me." << Of course that's what I'm referring to, and of course I'm cheating. Let's just say that I saw two acts that Richard, or his band, covered. And, if the REM show had ended any earlier, we were going to try to get up to the Postcrypt to see We're About 9, a band that has covered Richard. That would have rounded it out nicely.
