I've always thought that RS must have been thing about Ibsen's Play "A Doll's House" when he wrote this song. The main character in the play is a woman named Nora who has complicated relationships with her husband and a man she owe's money to--while at the same time struggling to be an independent woman in 19th century society. smg Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2003 08:07:19 -0700 (PDT) From: Deb Woodell Subject: Re: [RS] who is Nora?? I realize the subject has passed me by a little bit, but I wanted to relate a little Nora trivia. I saw Richard in March of 2002 (I think) at the Mansion in Middletown. Now, Nora is one of my all-time favorites of Richards', and having finally heard him perform it live I felt obligated to thank him for it after the show (he used to hang out for a few minutes afterwards when he played there to greet people). When I mentioned that I had never heard him perform it before, he responded with sort of a half-smile and said: "Well, I don't really believe it anymore..." I took this to mean that his opinion had shifted to where maybe it ("Nora, there is no sin...") WAS a sin; at any rate I remember being upset that he might be retiring the song. I think I've seen it a few times on setlists since, so I'm glad to hear that it's still being played. It was a somewhat enigmatic response though, and I wanted to share. The song will always be one of my favorites. Now, I don't know if we've covered this topic before, but I was wondering if anyone had pondered what songs by other artists they might like to hear Richard cover? I've often thought it would be a real treat to hear him do a version of some Dead or Jerry Garcia - I could see 'Brokedown Palace' with Lucy and maybe Dar on backing vocals, or possibly Dire Wolf...I wondered if anyone else wanted to share some tunes that they'd like to hear him do. I've always enjoyed it when I see him do covers live, even though his repertoire may only allow one or two per evening. As an aside, as I write this it occurs to me that I haven't yet heard the song "Fennario", and after mentioning the Dead's Dire Wolf before, I wonder...First line of Dire Wolf: "In the timbers of Fennario, the wolves are runnin' 'round..."; the first line of Peggy-O (traditional, but Jerry Garcia always had a fondness for this song): "As we rolled out of Fennario..." Is Richard a fan of the Grateful Dead? Hmmmm..... Cheers all, I'm back to lurking... I look forward to his return and hearing the new songs! I have never been disappointed by the length of RS's shows when he was in control of the situation. Richard seems to play as long as he has the strength to. I have seen him when he seemed exhausted, but in LA many performers have just gotten off a plane when we see them. But since RS was here last in May, I can't complain too much about him not being here. I fear however, that next time he won't come here - he'll go to San Diego instead. Wah :-(.
